So I got my Canon S2 the other day and headed off to the park to take some pictures.....

LMK what you think of these, this is the first DECENT digital camera I have ever owned so I don't have alot of experiance with photography yet.

All these pictures where taken with the camera with no added lenses. All images are unedited, the B&W photos with color accents where done with a special mode in the Canon S2. ----All Pictures are full size....5mp. 2-3mb each 56K Beware!----

Some Ducks
Another Duck with water reflection
Flower With Yellow/Greenish Tint left, Everything else changed to B&W.
Flower with Bug
Butterfly
Flower with Pink left in, everything else B&W
Two Dragonflies doing the NASTY!
Bunny!


LMK what you think, but like I said im a novice so be easy on me :p.....

Nice pics :)

I have the S1 IS myself, I :heart: it. I kinda wanted the S2, but lack of CF (Type II) slot = no go for me :p

I'm looking into that camera too. How much did the 12x zoom factor in your decision to buy it?

I'm looking at 10x optical or better cameras now... S1 IS and Fujifilm Finepix S5100 are the current front runners... good shots :thumbsup:

Very nice pictures!
This camera looks to be a very good learning camera that'll help introduce you to the wonders of photography. You certainly seem to have an eye for things :)

No critiques thus far, but a few pointers.

Get a tripod for macro. Be patient. Take lots of shots. Consider using continuous shooting if you're hand-holding at telephoto or macro to compensate for unsteady hands (not sure how good the IS is on your Canon).

For macro, set your f-stop high to get the greatest depth of field (f8 is probably your camera's max, but set a little lower than this as a lens' best image quality is in the middle f-stops). Depth of field is in very short supply when doing macro, so get as much as you can from the camera without sacrificing image quality. This probably means getting a tripod to compensate for the long shutter speeds as a result of high f-stop, or taking multiple pictures of the same scene but bringing a different area into focus in each shot and then merging them all in software to create a few nice, very high depth of field image.

For animals always focus on the eyes.

Get a clear UV filter to protect your actual camera lens.

If you have Photoshop CS2 read up on HDR and Dynamic Range as this is very important if you shoot scenes with highly contrasting subjects in the same frame (sunny sky with dark mountains for example).

Time your breathing with your shooting. Shoot after you completely inhale and after you completely exhale (the latter yields steadier results).

For extra steadiness, don't tap the shutter release. Raising your finger away from the button after you press shakes the camera. Press in and hold until the shutter has opened and closed completely. Then release.

That's all I can come up with right now. Still using my 'ol 4MP Olympus C-750 Ultra Zoom until I can get enough money for an SLR :)

not bad at all, you are brave for taking pictures of the Ducks. I remember when I tried to take pics of the ones by the pond next to my work, one chased me and tried to murder me. I had no idea ducks were such angry, vicious creatures.

Nice pics, they all look great but get a tripod, cuz you can tell on some that you moved a little.

that, or mess with the ISO settings, took me a bit to figure out to get good pics on my S5000 without my tripod.

The S2 IS is the follow up to the S1.

A LOT. And I LOVE IT!!! 12X zoom is GREAT.

ROFL! Yea there was one laying eggs I guess and the male was standing next to it, Hissing and Flaring up at me like "BIATCH get the Fvck outta here or im gonna kick your ass..."

My cousin was with me (12 y/o) and was like "JOSH!!!!! I think that duck is gonna attack us."

It made for some cool pictures though.

Pics look good.

Is it true that the S2 IS flash doesn't pop up on it's own?

I was thinking about buying this but the wife will probably hate it if the "full auto" mode isn't really full auto.

Yea if you want flash you have to flip it up... It wont work without if up, but you cna flip it up when you turn the camera on and then it works just like other canon camera's in auto mode, if it needs flash it uses it, if not it doesnt.... And you sitll have all the options to turn it on 100%, turn it off, red eye, etc...

Looking at picking up the S2 myself. Thanks for posting pics and opinions on it. That flash issue seems really annoying to me.
