Only experience, I guess, will make you realize how unreasonable people can be. I buy stuff in scholl but never sell anything in school because of the number of the lowballers involved. Anyway, I decided to try sell my new in box dell laptop and sent an email to the School list asking $730 for it. I get quite a few genuine replies from some lowballers. A couple of them who were directors in the some department offered $390 and $440. Dell was selling it for $899 in Home and $749 in Small Business on that day.

I knew I was going to get such replies but still wanted to try. I put it on Ebay and this guy emailed me just now asking if he could pickup the item and pay for it. I send him my phone number. He sent an email from my ebay auction page where the price was $485 and three days left. So I call him and he wants to pay me $400 for it. Mind you, he is not a newbie on Ebay. He has a perfect feedback of 131+. Come on, if you making an offer, just be reasonable Please. :(:(

Hehe, some guy emailed me last night asking if he could buy my camera (which I currently have on eBay - ending in about an hour). I said, "If the reserve price isn't met, or the bidder is non-paying, you can buy it for the reserve price + $8 UPS Ground. :) He said sure! No lowballers there. :)

You can expect that from a total stranger on Ebay. But the people who offered me $390 and $400 are directors of some dept. making atleast $60k / yr

Isn't that the point of ebay to try and get it for the lowest price. I mean if you were desperate to unload it, you might have sold it to them.

Why would anyone buy it from you when they could get it from dell for 19 bucks more?

a low ball is an offer....you just say no. If you do have a mention of no less than $x.xx and they try to go half that, then yeah that is just rude and a waste of time.

What I hate is the posts that say make offer (I work off a network eq list)....so you do and they come back with an offer already in their head like 10% off list.

One example was a network card, list is $1000, used aftermarket for wholesale is about $150....ebay is about $200, selling to an end user is about $250 with warranty....

We offered $150 a fair offer and we sent back about 1000 words of how we were criminals and as vendors should be ashamed we were trying to 'scam' someone.

He wanted $850. 6 months later he is still trying ot sell it once in a while.

you want $730 for a $749 computer?

what is the opposite of lowballer?

if a person isn't getting a good discount, why take a chance buying from a person vs. the normal channel?

The opposite of a low baller? I had someone offer $50 for a Queensryche game I had. Of course I said "sure" (I was thinking I'd be lucky to get $20). Then they said they'd pay for shipping. WOO!

Who told you that it is worth $749? It is a P4, 2.2GHz,15 XGA. I'll give you $730, can you get me one NOW?

another thing I was going to add....typically used and new open box items in computers/networking/etc go for 50% of list when I resell them (Cisco mainly)....I typically buy at 25% of list or less.

Best deal was a real building auction. Picked up 5 cards for $25 which were resold at $1500 each before they even got inventoried....at the time $2500 was a fair price.

You did?

Yes, Dell had it for $749 in small business and 8.4% tax. it is worth more than $900 now. Anyway that is not the question. The question is how people offered $400 for it.

I was selling a car once and listed it for 2000. A guy offered me 900. I just cuckled. He came and looked at it twice. I had to tell him point blank that he was wasting everyone's time. I sold the car to someone else for 1800.
