I help out in my high-schools computer lab sometimes. Anyway... today I needed to take out at CD drive and open it up because some guy said his cd "exploded" inside of it. I open it up and there are shards of cd everywhere. I was like WTF? How could this have happened.
THen I find the piece of cd with tape on it.
The story goes like this: This guy put the cd in his backpack, without a case for protection. A piece broke off while it was there. So he gets some tape and tapes it together, thinking that he can still get it to be read. He puts it in, and it "explodes."
The guy in charge of the computer lab had a nice long talk with him. I don't think he will ever be doing that again.
Oh, and amazingly, the cd rom still works fine.
