Decided to finish Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory this time since I could turn up the eye candy. These are with the 1.03 patch. Settings are: 1280x1024 res, SM3 mode, HDR, 16XAF, HQ soft shadows and textures, basically everything turned up except vsync which was set to off. The AA option is greyed out when you enable SM3 so there are jaggies galore.

I personally like the 1st and 3rd screens, but the horizon effect in the second looks nice too. To me this game looks better than most games out with the exception of Oblivion (with LOD tweaks and mods). Even FEAR didn't impress me much. Far Cry was so-so..a bit cartoonish.

Anyway, please post some of your eye candy screenies if you can.

Edit:
Some Oblivion screens:

Yeah I didn't know it looked this good either.:)
I have to say, soft shadows really do make a difference. They look so much better than normal shadows.

Is there any way to get AA with SM3 in that game?

Some screenies

I don't know about getting AA. I thought I read something about it before but it could have been another game I was thinking of. Thanks for the link. Nice screens by the way. I did some of the LOD tweaks and water/texture mods and Oblivion looked sooo nice. I'll post some of my screens in this thread as well as your thread.

Splinter Cell: CT will never get installed on any system of mine (just like any other Starforce protected game) unless and until a de-starforce'd version is made available, regardless of how good it may be.

Hold on!! Wait right there!!! This is important news!! I'm going to go call CNN and tell them that Gstandfor doesn't want to install "Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory" the PC video game on his computer!! Everyone really cares about this and they want to know........right?

Seriously Gstandfor, have you made a recent post that isn't a vague attack about the subject of the thread? Stop trolling.

One note, and I've noticed this in a lot of recent games. The reflection of light on objects like stone or wood is way too bright in a lot of games. It's almost like everything has a freaking waxed and polished surface. Most reflection in games seems to be specular reflection and not diffuse reflection. I think this is also the problem that gives character models that plastic look.

Yeah I noticed some of that in Splinter Cell. Although on faces it wasn't too bad I think.

Everyone don't get me wrong, games like Splinter Cell, Oblivion, etc look great. It's just that I think this lighting problem is a recurring one and that it should be fixed. It's most visible in Oblivion when you're looking at cave walls or floors and see light reflecting off of a rough stone surface as if it was a shiny surface. It's also in a game like EQ2 on the character models and to a lesser degree in screenshots of Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.

The issue doesn't detract from gameplay at all. It's just one of those minor annoyances of mine that seem to be in every game. Most times I don't even notice it, especially during heavy action.

Erm... Splinter Cell looks better than Oblivon IMO. I never liked the way oblivion looked, and theres no way something that looks like Oblivion would be too much for a highend gpu. Game code needs to be rewritten

its due to alot of blooming calculations, and these are done by formula and thus the engine usually isnt having different bloom settings for different materials.. well not for most of them, thus u get a odd glow on stuff youd think shouldnt be glowing...

I have this one in my photobucket; I took it a couple of hours after getting the game in april. It looks a little better than that in my rig currently due to beautification mods.
