some newbie questions about seti & seti queue

well, I searched the forum about these things & didn't get proper answers for my questions , so here they are:
1-Do I have to use setiQueue if I installed seti on 3 rigs?
1.5-If yes, then how exactly do I do it ( the gygabyte site is down for quite a few hours now...& I don't want to miss any WU...), or to be more exact, can one of my rigs be the "server"?
2-Can I see how many WU I make if I haven't finished a full data unit yet?
3- is it logical that my p4-M 2.2 has only done 29% after 8:30 hours of full load while my athlonXP@2310mhz has done 54% in 6:20 hours of partial load? (GO AMD!!!)

one more thing, after I O/Ced my rig I checked the cpu temp with HOTCPU & prime95 ,each for several hours. both of them didn't get my cpu to the temp that seti@home did after running for 10 minutes at 100% cpu load...

#1 No you don't have to use setiq
#2 no
#3 you must be using the screen saver version as those machines can crank out the work units. If you are using the screen saver you need to go to the client with seti driver, much faster that way. Also make sure you don't have any of the power saver options enabled except for blank monitor and no screen saver running.

Edit what temps is the cpu reaching I believe some P4's will thottle back your cpu if the temp gets too high.

1.No but it makes it easier to keep track of fleet output & you get plenty of stats🙂

2.Yes 1 of your rigs can be the server ,if you want to do that then let us know & we'll give you the info needed.Or you could check this SETIQ setup page at the TA SETI Hobbit site.

3.Yes that's normal, the P4 (clock for clock) is mucher slower than the Ath XP ,so the XP will bang through WUs much quicker at the same MHz🙂 ,oh yeah ,& what Freewolf said about GUI vs CLI

Re temps ,wierd ,I've always found that P95 gets the CPU hotter than SETI by about 3-4C!😕

Welcome to the forum & Team Anandtech🙂

You do not need setiqueue, but it sure is nice to have. It is very easy to keep track of your stats, progress, and if a machine is hung up or not. If you want to, just install setiqueue on a PC, any PC that you want (are you on dial up or broadband?) Configure it, (PM me or e-mail - seti at thewoodfamily dot us for help) then you would point the other computers for that to use (I have no idea about the gui version, but the cli version with setidriver or setihide is very easy to set up)

Example, setiqueue is installed on PC with IP 192.168.100.1
that is where you would point the clients http://192.168.100.1 port 5517

It is really pretty easy to set up, and there are plenty of helpful chaps around here to help if you get stuck.

Just a quick point about the command line version.

There are two versions 3.03 and 3.08, the version you want/need is the 3.03 as it is much quicker to crunch than the 3.08. 🙂

ok, thanks for the info.
I finsinhed data units on 2 rigs & I saw that it updates everything properly...
also when I changed (still using gui ver) it to work in the background without the screensaver, the speed increased dramaticly.
& although there's no doubt that a 2310mhz XP+ (@210x11) is faster than a p4 2.2ghz(at fsb 100 with ddr266) , the margin between them is now more logical...
thanks...

Shows what I know about intel I thought they was the same cpu. I think I will go back to my AMD world now 😉

lol🙂 ,Pentium M's are a hybrid cpu between a P3 & a P4 with a big cache (1Mb i think) ,P4 Ms are just P4s with I believe a lower clock & voltage.

Yeah if you minimise the window &/or set 'blank screen' this will cut WU time in 1/2 (no cpu power being used for drawing the graphics) ,even after that though the CLI is still about 25% faster

I don't think Seti is calculating the proper WU times for the P4 w/HT

I have a Centrino 1.7GHz that puts out approximately 13.5 WUs @ Day

My P4 3.2GHz w/HT (running two WUs at a time) puts out approximately 16.5 WUs @ Day

Using a trusty little calculator

24 hours * 60 minutes {a day in minutes} / 13.5 {Centrino} = 106.67 minutes or 1 hour 46.67 minutes per WU

24 hours * 60 minutes {a day in minutes} / 16.5 {P4} = 87.27 minutes or 1 hour 27.27 minutes per WU

In my book the P4 is the fastest cruncher (of these two Intel CPUs). 🙂

Analyze that! 😛
