some members of the armed forces are unbelieveably rude

I have no problems with the marines in general, but I despise anyone that uses this in regular conversation. Awful mentality to have.
It's like a speaker saying "Professional" on the front - would a professional quality speaker really say that? No, and I think the same applies to people.

You know, I've always held a lot of respect for those in any armed forces. I'm glad that people find their bliss in that career. But, I have a beef.

(snip)

Are you fucking kidding me? Give me a break. Just because you joined the marines, or any armed forces, doesn't make you any better than anyone else. I've met several people in the armed forces who are just as retarded as any civilian. Its a miracle they even made it through boot camp. He's training to do some special operations crap, but has to be in infantry first. I'm glad he's doing it, and hope he has fun. I still have respect for everyone in the military, but give me a break, don't have a God complex and be so condescending and rude.

"semper fi" and all that jazz...

if it wasn't for the Marines and other US armed forces you might be whining in german now instead of having the freedom to whine about your experience with soldiers in the USA.

IMHO serving or having served your country as a soldier just might make you a little better than a civilian that has not.

maybe the active and retired soldiers have a beef with whiney civilians that don't have their stuff together.

My dealings with Marines.

1) Confirmed Marine - My Sensei for Karate. Probably one of the best people you'd ever know... willing to do anything to help you.
2) Unconfirmend Marine - Douchebag neighbor that flies a Marine flag and shoots my shed with paintballs. He avoids me, shoots my shed, and treats his dog like shit... therefore, he's an asshole.

My conclusion is 50% of Marines are excellent people, 50% of Marines are assholes.

It's hard to be patient when you obtain god-like status. <shrug> And, it's true. Civilians are pretty disgusting. They just can't help it.

Seriously though, if you are an asshole going into the Marine Corps, you'll be an asshole still. If you aren't, chances are that you won't be. Simple as that.

I don't think all marines are unfriendly, but I don't think I've ever met a nice marine. I met this one Marine in WoW who kept herbalizing my kills. I called him on it, asked him to stop and he acted all haughty and pretty much had that same civie-hating attitude that the OP mentioned. Then he started talking about real patience and being willing to shit your pants while lying down in wait. It was a really weird conversation 😕.

I have some friends in the Army and National Guard and I haven't seen any sort of radical attitude change in them. I think only one of them really likes being in there though. Speaking of National Guard... I don't get why they're called that when they get sent overseas? I guess you could consider it any nation, but aren't they sort of the "homeland defense" in a way? Tend to be sent off to incidents (such as disasters) and the such? The unit my friends are in is being sent over to Iraq again and from what it looks like, my friend won't graduate college until he's 25 or 26 :Q. It's always seemed like such a life deferral.

A lot of this kind of behaviour likely has to do with Youth/Immaturity. A lot of them were Nobodys before, the Military gives them some purpose and a unique Skill(ability to physically put down others Dead or Alive) and it just kind of goes to their head. In time, most who end up that way will get past it.

After the Cold War ended the decision was made to draw down the active duty forces with the thinking that the required National Guard units would be called up in the event of a significant conflict to fill in the gaps. This is what's happened with the Iraq war.

National Guard units are useful at home as they can enforce state law in at the behest of the Governor when called up in state during an emergency. Federal troops (except under extraordinary circumstances) and the NG troops from other states can't do this. I don't believe the feds draw down enough units from any one state to render them unable to responds to an emergency. Support units can also be loaned to neighboring states.

WTF? You don't do shit about your shed? It sounds like it's frequent? 😕

I live near Oceanside, CA which is not far from Camp Pendleton and I'd have to say that most of the Marines I've met, and I've met many over the years, have been outstanding people.

Military life can get pretty trying sometimes. some people expect more from civilians b/c thats what they're accustomed to in their respective branches. oOhers don't the humility they should have when it comes to serving, but different folks different strokes. I for one, am jealous of everyone whom aren't bound to the military. For you haters, I leave you with this: spend 9 months out of the year on an annual basis, in the desert. then call me a 'trashy piece of shit,' b/c then you'll earn the right to call me whatever you want.

Thanks for that

I don't think any sane person would ever do that. Hell, I'm what has been defined lately as a whackjob liberal and I have the utmost respect for what the military does. Unfortunately, though, nothing excuses anyone from being a douchebag.

Just maybe?

Sure, just maybe, but I've met enough people in the Marines for me to generalize the entire marines as rude.

So, you've met every marine who has ever served? Because that's what it would take for you to have actually met "enough" to make that generalization.

I'm honestly curious, how long have you been in the Marines? Are you currently in a warzone? This isnt a loaded question, I just don't remember reading that you were a marine beyond a year ago.

You are correct. I've been in about ten months. I'm not anywhere near a war zone as I'm still in school.

I've dealt with Marines quite a few times and in various situations. They tend to wear different faces at different times. They all have a hive mentality. It is the point of all basic training to remove the individual and the person and replace it with a corp of soldiers. It verges on brainwashing. And the marines are the best. They do tend to look down on any one who hasn't served or anyone who hasn't served in a position they deem worthy. National Guards, Air Force, and Coast Guard all tend to fall into this category. They are Meatheads and more then a couple will admit that the Marines were their only option. This can be due to multiple factors, but it tends to be due to screwing up. They are extremely proud and very narrow minded. I will say that this narrow mindedness is completely lost if the person is another marine. They are all very disciplined and know how to act in public. Put them in a private situation and added alcohol and you have a 15 car pile-up on your hands. It goes without saying that they may have the shortest tempers possible while still being a functional member of society. Quite a few are just barely on this side of sane.

They are broken down and turned into a part of the military machine. It is how the system works.

I'm glad you posted in this thread. You went to boot camp out in San Diego, you came back and you were still your fun-loving, enjoyable self.

I did spend time behind a retail counter. I worked Geek Squad for a year and at numerous apple orchards for two.
