10 sheets of super duty ultra platnium grade construction paper.

OLEDs will be the next best things for laptops... Not Longhorn.

I fear the same, but everything I've *read* says that it's supposed to be *highly* modularized and capable of a *very* light footprint. I guess we will have to wait and see though.

At work I use nLite to streamline my Unattended Installation source and then build an automatic install CD that loads up the "base" apps that everyone uses. Then I've got my other apps arranged per-department for auto-deployment via Active Directory when the user logs into his or her PC. All in all, not bad. My base XP install with the core apps weighs in at under a gig installed, which isn't too bad ;)

Actually it came from xinhuanet.com which is an incredibly unreliable "news" source. - Anyone remember the story they ran w/ that used TheOnion.com as it's source? yeesh

ps - I don't necessarily believe the story is untrue (or true), just sayin'

Well I went to Google News and this was a story in the Tech/Sci section. The link went to the sight I linked in the original post, which seemed like a random place to me so I mentioned that it originally was from Google for some possible better credibility.

MS is probably looking to maintain Longhorn and Longhorn embedded from the same source tree so it would make sense that it would be modularized, the kicker will be whether or not MS will make it easy/possible to remove those components on normal installs.

what do you think of this line?
"Gates said the new operating system Longhorn will usher in a new era of laptops no thicker than 10 sheets of paper with day-long battery life and costing less than $1,000. "

I'm more interested in the body art article advertised below the Longhaul article. :D

As thick as 10 sheets of paper? That's slightly thicker than a CD. Where's the drive going to fit? And ventilation fans, or is it just going to use your lap as a heatsink? Maybe he meant 10 sheets of cardboard?

I would think the hardware is more important for weight and battery life than the os/software the notebook is running

Depends. The OS has to know how to step the CPU down, minimize hard disk activitiy, etc to save battery as well.

Quite an assessment from looking at screenshots.

The WinHEC version of Longhorn isn't very representative of what the final product, or even Beta1 will look like. Remember what WinHEC is...mainly a conference on driver development. This version of Longhorn is only concerned with the core of the OS, nothing fancy.

I agree. I think this fugly interface is mostly a placeholder to make the development version of Longhorn look unique from XP for now. So far they haven't demoed ANY of the Avalon display tech yet, nor have they shown off Aero Glass. I'm betting the Avalon/Aero team is working on the REAL Longhorn GUI and probably won't have it ready to inetgrate into the previews and betas until late this year or early next year. The GUI you're seeing right now will must likely only be seen in the final Longhorn as a fallback GUI if you've got a video card that can't handle the Avalon eye candy.
