yeah, I've decided that a laptop would be alot better for me than a full desktop. Besides, I'd rather be able to use my laptop for homework updtairs, listen to music in my room or chat on IRC as I watch TV. Anyway, I thought I'd post the specs of a few systems and get your opinions on stuff.

Both of these are based on MSI barebones systems. I buy the RAM, HD and processor myself.
System 1 : cheaper system

Based on : MSI MS-1029
Processor: turion 64 2.2 ghz, 1mb
Ram: 2 gigs 400mhz DDR
Graphics: ATI X700 128 mb
Screen: widescreen 15.4"
HD : 80 gig 5400 rpm
$1400

System 2: Better, I'll get this is I can afford it

Based on: MSI MS-1036
Processor: turion 64 2.2 ghz, 1mb
Ram: 2 gigs 400mhz DDR
Graphics: ATI X700 256 mb
Screen: widescreen 17"
HD: 80 gig 7200
$1700

so the main reason I decided to get a laptop is that I doubt I will upgrade before university in 3 years, and I'll need a laptop then. Either way, if I really do need to upgrade laptops hold their value alot better than desktops. My dads work lappy is worth about 200-300 on ebay, an equal desktop ~50$. Both of these are built for desktop replacement notebooks, but I decided against the Athlon 64 processor because they may be cheaoer, but get hotter and use more power for little preformance benefit. The gfx card should be good enought to play most newer games decently? I don't play alot, maybe just some NFSU2 or Quake 4. What is a decent 3Dmark 05 score nowdays?

PS: I just found out that a new model is out in march. MS-1037 It'll have the same monitor as the 1036, but an X1600 or a Geforce Go 7600. Also support for faster ram. I hope to god they dont use intel.

Either way, I may be able to save a few hundred on the 1036 if they do.

EDIT: and what do you think about monitors? I have never owned a leptop before and thus 17" appeals to me. Especially since this would be my only computer. Maybe I wouldn't notice the 15" being small because it's a laptop? The screen is the main reason I would be spending the extra money anyway.

I wouldn't buy an MSI Laptop. I'd stick with a Dell or something as parts will be more widely available and cheaper most likely.
