My apartment in college was right across the street from a pretty affluent HS in Irvine. I remember seeing a C63, Cayenne and boatloads of 3/C/A4/IS, even a lifted 3500HD Duramax.

The best part of it though was the kid who tried to burn out his paper plate 335i coupe when leaving but got one of the back wheels stuck in the gutter when he did it. He ended up spinning out into incoming traffic and nailing an Explorer going the other way.

My kids will be buying their own first car. I bought a 10 year old ford ranger for $1500 and drove it until I had almost graduated college before buying another 10 year old ranger which I still have and am about to clear 200,000k miles

The parents let their kid drive their Mercedes to school every day?

Still the same problem: The kids are spoiled.

I see that a lot at the high school parking lot near me. Most days when I get off college I drive by and they are still in class. Way too many nice cars for a relatively poor town like Manassas.

The last thing this world needs are more spoiled teenagers with a sense of entitlement that later becomes adults who refuse to work hard because they think the world owes them something.

I might assist my kids with getting a car by doing something like matching whatever money they save so long as they get good grades, stay out of trouble, do chores, etc. I would NEVER outright buy them a car.

Say what you want about spoiling your kids but most don't end up like that. In fact I think every single one of my friends parents have purchased them a car, and none of them are lazy in any regard. Most got them as a reward for working hard in college/HS and continued the same when they got the car. My parents purchased my first car for me, and helped me out with the GTI that I have now as well.

My parents purchased my brother's car as well and hes a doctor now. Only a small percentage of people who get their cars purchased for them act like you say.

I went to a high school where kids had brand new BMWs, MBs, Lexuses, and other high-end cars. The kids driving these were the biggest douchebags in school... what a shocker, right?

The kids around here drive very nice cars, poor little bastards have to go all the way across town to steal them.

The first car I drove was a 1976 Ford Torino hard top, black over orange. The second was a 1982 Silver Pontiac 6000.

I shared both with my dad (my mom drove the nice car, 1980 Ford LTD ;) ).

when I was in HS I drove a 76 Camaro RS and 79 5.0 Mustang (both family cars)......... never got into an accident but I did get 1 speeding ticket 2 weeks after I got my license :(

I am still driving the first car I ever bought with my own money, 1990 Honda Civic Si.

Cheers,
Aquaman

From my observations with spoiled rich kids, they literally are useless, lack in character and at times clumsy due to never had to work hard for what they got.

Had a guy at my high school who totaled his M3, so as "punishment" his parents bought him a new 3 series.

My first car was a 1989 Ford Escort 2-door with a 5-spd. I paid $600 for the car, I was 15. At the time I worked at a grocery store. No one helped me by the car or insure it. My folks did help me with gas though. Mom and Dad were upper middle class and could have bought me a car but I never asked them to and I didn't want them to. I can remember they were proud of me that I had the drive to do it myself. :)

When you earn something for yourself there are no strings attached - it's like no other feeling, at least to me.
