Some help for my wife, please. Her NT4.0 BDC lost the WinNT32\config\system file.

My wife logged into her NT4.0 server as admin today to change the time. It hung up. She rebooted and when it came back she got

"Unable to recognize WinNt32\config\system".

She's a bit unsure about the rest of the message, but it said something like "insert the WinNT Server CD and press R for repair."

I would like to help her, but it has been some time since I have dealt with WinNT 4.0.

I recall something about a boot disk and I think 3 ERD disks. Am I right?

This server is the BDC. Can I make the Boot and ERD disks from the PDC?

I would really like to get her store back up and running. Can you help me?

<< oh man, i thought she was having a baby or something... >>

lol, I thought it also was on the lines of personal things. 😛

Under serious circumstances I have alway trusted you guys. Can my wife repair her server?

Are there any MCSE 4.0 Admins out there?

I really need some help.

Thanks for the help WombatWoman. I appreciate it. BTW, if I can take the "Den Mother" reference at face value it might be interesting to you that the store I am mentioning is one of two BSA stores my wife manages in the L.A. area.

The PDC and BDC are identical servers that have been running flawlessly for close to 4 years. All my wife did was log out and then back in as Admin to change the time. Unfortunately, the computer froze and she had to do a hard shutdown. Upon rebooting the trouble began. My first thought was that the HDD may be developing bad sectors and the hard reboot, while reloading the system files, couldn't find the offending file.

Fortunately, she makes regular tape backups. Unfortunately, they have never been tested.

I'll pass on your information in the hopes that it will help.

It may well be a problem with bad sectors, or the system being busy to write to that file when it locked up. Check the drive to start with when you got it running again btw. Might be an idea to put in an extra disk for mirroring, just set up RAID 1 for the system partition to rule out future disk errors.

If the machines don't change very often it may be wise to keep an image of the system partition somewhere safe too. If something goes wrong you can just put back that image, and the system will be up and running again. If you make changes to the system, just create a new image.
