Too bad Staples doesn't have a rebate-based deal. I've come to really appreciate their "Easy Rebate" system. All done on-line, fast turnaround, no hassles.

Thanks for all the compiled info allisolm.

BTW, the Maxtor drive is $69.99 (or rather $69.94) if you use Chicago trick. Or, you can add $15 worth of filler and use the drive-specific $15 off coupon mentioned on the Staples page for the final cost of $55. Still cold deal, though.

There is also $40 AR Western Digital 120GB at Microcenter, ending today. Not a national chain, but can be ordered online.

Thanks for compilation, OP. No good deals. Looks like I am going to have to wait at least another week. Sigh.... and this time I actually need the drive for myself, and not for resale.

Hey nice compilation..I was wondering is the segate 160 GB....I was considering getting the one at amazon.com the 200 gb seagate which is ending today..and was waiting on this weeks special deal before purchasing a hard drive. I want basically a seagate becuase of their 5 yr waranty. Can you tell me which deal is better...or if there is any other seagate deals out there on the net for a reliable company. I'm looking to purchase it tonight. Thanks.

Do the math, find out the cost per gig. Divide the cost of the drive by the number of gigs to find that out. Usually rebate deals will beat all other deals, so its doubtfull you'll find any better online. But feel free to check froogle.com (googles price search engine) and pricewatch.com
And you can always check all the places the OP listed to make sure he didn't miss any.

I think 3 year warranty is plenty for most people, but 5 year is nice.
"DISC DRIVE LEADER SEAGATE INTRODUCES 5-YEAR WARRANTY ON ALL INTERNAL COMPUTER HARD DRIVES SHIPPED IN DISTRIBUTION AND RETAIL CHANNELS"
Thats a quote from a seagate press release (thier 5 year warranty FAQ link on thier support page does not work).
I didn't realize they had gone to 5 years, but thats cool. I thought it was really bad of all the hdd manufactures to drop to 1 year from previous standard of 3, and they all did it within a week of each other, so obviously they colluded together about it. They are probably seeing that the drop in warranty didn't make much of a differance in the amount of money they were losing for replacing hdds (I would imagine if a drive will fail it probably will in 1st year usually) so they decided to increase again.

I thought only the WD raptor, and some scsi drives were 5 year but this is cool.

Considering I've never even seen those in retail packages, you are most likely going to have to order them OEM from online stores. Which means most likely no rebates. So either you can get a cheap $20 USB case and shove a 200 gig drive in it when they have a $60 sale, or just buy one from a place like newegg. Plug that into a laptop and you have a fast hdd, and a cheap one.
The prices arent THAT bad.
Now when you say fast do you mean 5400 as opposed to 4200 rpm? Or do you want the 7200 rpm? Because 7200 rpm stuff is expensive.
$130 at newegg for a 40 gig 7200 rpm and $250 for a 60 gig 7200 rpm.

For 5400 rpm, 60 gig for $90, $114 for 80 gig, and the largest size of laptop hdd I see there: 100 gig for $178 (wow retail package at newegg, I guess some do come in retail)

Dell has a 25% off coupon for all storage purchases now in Small Business. I noticed that they had quite a few notebook drives, but I am not looking for one, so I don't know what good prices are.

Fry's retails stores and Outpost.com have the Seagate 200GB HDD (5yr warranty) for $70AR+tax. Rebate is for $50 and expires on 4/28/05 (3 days), so get on it! I picked one up in store the other day and it is absolutely silent!

it's good to know you get around and not just doing one site. We all like worst buy, circus city and off depot even better than crapusa

I'm thinking about getting that 80 gig from best buy.. their rebates have always been good to me..

is there a cheaper 40 gig out there? Thanks everyone.
