After a couple months at 24hr fitness...

1. There are a lot of BIG dudes there. Big as in with a ton of muscles. Makes me feel so small and out of shape.

2. There are a lot of people who just sit at the machines and stare at themselves in the mirror. They don't look like they are resting. They just sit... and chill... occupy the machine... and stare at themselves.

3. Some people just have bad form.

4. Weight bar collars don't exist. They're all either lost, misplaced, or people just don't use them.

5. No room to hardly do anything.

6. Pull up bars don't exist. As in, just a simple horizontal unbroken bar. You've got big steel cage things with numerous protruding handhold things but never just a simple bar. I can't find a way to do pullups with the proper amount of spacing between my hands.

7. Mirrors all over the goddamn place. It's hard for me to do an intense workout when there's a mirror right in front of me and my focus gets broken by the sight of myself. Just give me a blank wall.

8. Lots of people doing bicep curls...

9. Lots of people reading a book as they sit, sip on lemonade, and effortlessly pedal the exercise bike. Emphasis on "without effort."

10. Some newbs who go there and are absolutely clueless on what to do. These guys I feel bad for.

11. Naked people in the locker rooms and no curtains on the showers - what. the. fuck.

I wonder where all those collars go.

I asked a 24hr customer service guy and I think he had to go run upstairs to get a pair...

I have no idea. However the weights are such that they are extremely difficult to slide off, so I guess they stay put pretty good.

This is by far my biggest issue. It makes me rage when I want to use said item but they are too busy hanging out on their phone. And then when you ask for it they look at you stupid and start to use it.

At one 24 Hr location I use to frequent, there would usually be a missing pin for the weight stack on some of the cable pulldown or cable row machines which rendered it useless. I have no idea why people would steal those things.

Lol, what else are you supposed to do between heavy sets? I take between 3-5 mins rest on my really heavy squat sets and don't have much else to do but look in the mirror, watch tv, stand around etcv

6. That sucks. Contraptions like that can do the job for certain people, but why spend thousands of dollars for stuff like that (that won't fit everyone), but not have a simple straight bar that everyone can use for a variety of exercises? Could be a deal breaker for me.

7. That's a personal preference thing I guess. I prefer mirrors everywhere if possible. Can't always check your form without compromising your form, but it comes in handy often enough that I've grown to like mirrors.

11. Naked people in the locker rooms -- that's just a mental thing to deal with. I guess people could retort that no-shower-curtains could be the same, but that's too much for me to deal with too lol. I'd be finding a new gym.

you get what you pay for in gym memberships

Agreed. The Lifetime Fitness chain of gyms is more expensive, but nicer and less crowded in my experience. And then there's privately owned health clubs, costing $150 or more a month, but very nice and not crowded at all.

24 hour fitness, Balleys, etc. sell too many memberships because they're so cheap. With so many people, you get a certain percentage of clowns, like people who want to talk on their cell phone while occupying a machine.

I used to think this too until I realized that the wider your grip during pullups, the better. Just get used to doing them that way, and it'll help your V-shape.

I think I have a weird quirk that stems from the opposite of this. I do multiple sets and never rest on the machine, so I get up stand by the machine. I swear I'm the only one standing sometimes.

They definitely hit the lats better, if that's what you're aiming for, but you gotta be pretty strong already compared to your bodyweight to do em without risking injury. It's not a good way to start pullups unless maybe if you're tiny.

This is not people like you. This is people who sit on a machine and wait around, do 20 reps, and then continue to sit. If I see some dude stack some weight on there and do 6 reps, I respect the fact that he's working hard. It's just those people who sit on the leg extension machine with 3 plates and look around for 5-7min, then do 10 reps, and repeat. It's silly. Then again, I don't use machines so I'm not typically affected by those individuals :p The people who do curls in the squat rack on the other hand...

Same here. I cant just sit there after a set. I have to get up and kind of pace around for a minute and then get back to it. I dont care if people are using a machine/bench/whatever and sit there but its the people who just seem to sit there for 10 minutes and not do anything at all.

My gym has some of that stuff but is an entirely different experience.

1. Lots of mirrors everywhere, I think this is normal for a gym.

2. Lots of people using treadmills/bikes/climbers/rowing machines.

3. Lots of hot jailbait working out with weights. Realizing these kids are anywhere from 14-20 because the gym I go to has a family plan that allows kids to go free under their parent's plan until they reach 21 and individual plan is too expensive for a young 21-30 year old to justify.

4. Try not to stare at jailbait doing squats.

5. Try not to stare at jailbait doing good mornings.

6. Try not to stare at jailbait...

If they dress like a whore, and they all do, then it is okay to look.
Also, to everyone, don't think that the girls aren't checking out the guys!! I've caught a few ladies gawking at my impressive 225 squat LOL...

Then again, I quit going to the "gym" earlier this year ... glad I bought a rack, now my g/f lifts with me and sometimes we do it naked.

Ive caught my friends g/f checking me out a few times. Its kind of creepy because my friend is kind of fat so she REALLY stares.

No need to dress like a whore. Jailbait wearing workout spandex doing any bending excercises induces boner impulse. This especially sux when I am trying to do a deadlift.
