I got my GT from compusa today. Did some overclocking, it reached 408/1056 (really pisses me off) :disgust: without artifacting in 3dmark. Looks like I got the lame card of the batch. :(

Anyway here are some benches:

3dmark03
6800 GT (408/1056): 12153
x800 XTPE (600/1200): 14872

Painkiller 1600x1200 4xAA/8xAF (I played the 2nd demo running in and shooting the 2 guys on the barrels).

9800 (461/351): Min: 26 Avg: 37.7 Max: 52
6800 GT (408/528): Min: 41 Avg: 66.4 Max: 117
x800 XT: (603/612) : Min: 57 Avg: 83.7 Max: 132

Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow (again used demo, played level where you start on train. jumped down and walked into next compartment up to the guy there) 1600x1200 8xAF

9800 (461/351): Min: 10 Avg: 24.1 Max: 54
6800 GT (408/528): Min: 23 Avg: 50.3 Max: 87
x800 XT: (603/612) : Min: 31 Avg: 65.8 Max: 86

I'll update this thread as I get some more testing done. It's nice to have what is in my opinion the 2 best cards to buy in the next generation. Regardless, one of these cards is going on the market soon.

I am using cats 4.7 and 61.80s. The price I paid for the GT was $300 and the XT $440. Their MRSPs are $400 and $500 respectively.

you might want to try the 62.01, the guys at guru3d.com are raving about them on their forums, i am about to give them a try.

I'd keep the X800XT. 600Mhz is an insane overclock (this is on air, without vmods, right?), considering most sites got it to 530-540 if they managed to overclock it at all; the 6800GT overclock is a bit below average, though not terrible. I mean, damn. That gives the X800XT a full 50% higher fillrate...
Then again, X800XTs are practically impossible to find (haven't seen one at newegg, while 6800Us have been on and off, though mostly off), so you could probably sell it for a nice premium.

General Grievous,

Would you sell the Xt for $500? Is it a retail card?

Watch the FSFT forums, jrphoenix, I'll put one of the 2 cards up there within a week or so probably.

I wouldn't sell it for $500 anyway, considering someone sold one for like $700 on ebay. :D

I'll keep my eyes open but $700 would be too rich for my blood :p Thanks for the update!

It's a PNY.

Did you test coolbits for optimal settings? Is that was you are using now?

wow, 50% more money for a card giving you 7-10% more fps.

But I guess its a little unfair to bench mark a 2nd teir card(GT) against a 1st tier(XT PE).

THX for the benchies, kinda solidifies my upcoming GT purchase, lol if BB ever gets them in stock.

How is the noise of each (compared to 9800P) in 2D and 3D modes? It would also be a good idea to list all the benches at the top of the thread.

I used coolbits to overclock and checked for artifacts in 3dmark. I don't know what else the program can do though.

Well, its quite a bit more than that. But yeah, this $300 GT is a great buy. At MSRP though there is only a 25% price increase.

Although I don't care, the 9800 Pro is the quietest and the coolest. The GT is the loudest and the XT is by far the hottest. I'll put benches at the top as well. My 9800 has a zalman heatpipe though.

It's silent over my hard drives and case fans. It's no louder then my 9800 that's for sure. It's likely even quieter. And the performance gain going from a 9800 to a 6800GT is a lot more than 20%, I'll tell you that at least.

His benches show a much larger than 7-10% diff between the OCed 6800GT and X800XT:

3DMark03: 23% faster
Painkiller: Minimum FPS 9% faster, Avg. 26% faster, Max. 13% faster
Splinter Cell: Minimim FPS 35% faster, Avg. 31% faster, Max. same (looks system limited).

Obviously, it's not a complete set of benches, but I'd call that more than a 10% difference in speed. Unless you're referring to some other benches...
