my price range is 120 tops, now what can i get for that price that will be good gaming ram for battlefield 2 type games

More info about system is always welcome.

What is your CPU, etc.

With an A64, using good OCZ or Corsair Value RAM will be fine.

Actually, the biggest question is are you going to OC? If not, you can get Corsair Value Select for like 70 bucks - no difference between this and 400 dollar ram. If you ARE, however, you'll need to look into more expensive choices.

Your price range is $120 and you want good gaming RAM?

$120 buys you value RAM, which is fine - but don't expect primo stuff. What you really ought to think about, especially if you're playing BF2, is the amount of RAM. BF2 and future games will want 2GBs of RAM for optimal performance. Bump up the budget to get 2GBs and you're all set, even with Corsair Value RAM. Buy a single 1GB DIMM of Corsair Value RAM...that's about $80. Better yet, buy two 1GB DIMMs of the stuff for $160. If push comes to shove, and you absolutely can't get another $40 together, just get the $70-80 twin pack of Corsair Value RAM (it's two 512MB DIMMs, for a total of 1GB). Then add two more 512MB DIMMs later on for a total 2GB of installed memory.

I personally doubt that BF2 is going to "need" 2GB of RAM. 512mb will run most games nicely enough, and many pre-made PCs (Dell, HP, Compaq) don't even support that much memory. 2x512mb of Corsair Value Select should work just fine, although there are choices at NewEgg that are a shade cheaper.

1) EA confirms you'll want to use 2GBs for optimum performance
2) Have you played the demo? I have, and I've tested it with 1.5GB versus 2GB. Playing with 1.5GB the game still had some studdering from time to time, but when I popped in 2GBs - holy **** - it was like butta. The game never hiccupped at all when using 2GBs, no matter what was happening on-screen. Amazing.

2GBs of RAM, to Battlefield 2, is what 1GB of RAM is to Battlefield 1942. It's just that simple. Sure, will it run with less? Certainly. I'm talking about experiencing the game the way it was meant to be played...once you've done that, there's no going back to "just good enough".

Well, I ran the demo with 16 bots and my max memory usage went to 1.15GB. I dont have anything unusual running in the background, mind you. If I were to bump that up to 32 bots, my system would really stutter. Already, the time where there was a big battle going on would drop my framerates below 25, and I was running the game at 800x600 lowest detail to take my 6800GT out of the equation. I'm going to get another gig.

The Inq tested 512MB vs 1024MB and found a ~15% difference in performance IIRC, nothing to sniff at.
I don't think they went any higher though, so whether that kind of trend continues I don't know.

But partly it depends on what games you play, whether you OC and what CPU you have.
4x512MB on anything but a Venice if you have AMD ain't the best idea ever.

Performance difference between "value" ram and "gaming" ram, 0-5%

Price difference between "value" ram and "gaming" ram, 150-350%
