What sort of barbarian eats something that's still alive? :colbert:

http://www.wisegeek.com/are-vegetables-dead-when-you-buy-them-at-a-grocery-store.htm

Some of us have been told in the past that fruits and vegetables are actually dead when you buy them at a grocery store. It turns out, however, this is not true. Research shows that some picked vegetables, such as carrots and broccoli, die only when they are eaten.

This research was carried out by Rice University and published in Current Biology in 2013. The study discovered that about a week after some fruit and vegetables were picked, they continued to respond to light. This means that fruits and vegetables in the produce aisle of grocery stores are still very much alive. In fact, they even continue to produce compounds that protect them from pests thanks to their circadian clock.

Experts believe that this knowledge can be used for benefit, such as to maximize the natural pest defense qualities of plants and reduce the use of chemical pesticides. The knowledge of circadian rhythms may also be utilized to maximize the nutrients of plants for consumption.

My first wife had a Hawaiian step father, was kinda funny when we got done with lobster nets and went spear fishing up North Shore where he lived and the whole family had property.

He's spear an octopus, cut off a leg tip and eat it, shove the rest in the mesh catch net, the end would be wriggling around outside his mouth.

He's always said, "watch when they flash red" when we were walking around looking for them, had a woman I used to work with tried to refute that once :p

She was a part time diver, thought she knew more than advice than people who grew up doing it.

Even weirder was the fact he was a local and never learned to swim, me and his son did that when we went out.

Not that surprising, I guess. I was surprised at this a bit, though:
The typical lunch at American schools has 1,400 calories and includes one bread item, about 1.5 ounces of meat, one starch, a half cup of vegetables or fruit and 8 ounces of milk.
Jeez, no wonder so many are overweight. Well, that's not the sole reason, but it must be at least a factor. That's way too much for one meal, don't ya think? On the other hand, not every kid eats everything on the plate. Thinking back to my own experience in school, a lot of kids just ate the "main" entree.

Doesn't sound right at all. I remember school lunches. And based on what they describe, it sounds much closer to perhaps 700 calories. 1400 in a school-style lunch would be a feast.

wtf? 1400? LOL no.

in fact calories are strictly counted and for many kids it's far to low.

K-5 max 650
6-8 max 700
9-12 max 850

For a young athlete these are very low numbers. There are times when my kids come home hungry because they get a small lunch. the other day they had "pizza dunkers" for lunch. they got 2 bread sticks with dipping sauce, an apple and milk.

That definitely is wrong, particularly with the menu listed. 1400 calories must make kids yearn for school lunch, because it would be thick with cheese and/or red meat, and in large quantities. Not really the case.

Not to say school lunches are very healthy, but those numbers are way off.

The linked article by the OP is true. If carrots are left in the fridge long enough, they sometimes will grow new tops. And potatoes will sprout tubers. But I doubt you are going to have any PETA members, shed tears for the poor veggies.

Vegetables are supposed to be alive when you're eating them. That's how they stay all crisp and delicious right up to the end.

according to my mum, i used to love raw beef minced meat when i was a kid.

i switched my preference to napalm-charred meat when i started to go to camp, and all our food was cooked on campfires. eventually lost appetite for rare stuff, and now i can't eat anything less cooked than medium.
