FREE STEAM® GAMES FOR ALL ATI RADEON? GRAPHICS CARD OWNERS

May 30, 2007 - Valve®, a leading entertainment and technology studio, today announced plans to deliver free games to all owners of ATI RadeonTM graphics cards via Steam, a leading online platform for the distribution and management of digital content.

Effective immediately, all owners of ATI Radeon graphics cards may receive a free copy of Half-Life® 2: Lost Coast and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch via Steam, http://www.steampowered.com/ati_offer1a/. Steam will automatically confirm the presence of ATI Radeon? hardware and then enable immediate access to full versions of the games free of charge.

For added convenience to new purchasers of ATI Radeon? products, Steam will be included in all ATI Catalyst? Software and Driver packages through early 2008.

And, as recently announced by AMD, customers who purchase the new ATI Radeon? HD 2900 XT will also receive, upon release via Steam, the highly anticipated trio of new games coming from Valve: Team Fortress® 2, Portal?, and Half-Life 2: Episode Two.

Some conditions apply. Customers will be required to download and install the Steam software, and will require an Internet connection.

Nice gesture by ATI and Valve. Especially since it's for older hardware too.

That is pretty nifty. But STEAM included in catalyst drivers? There better be an option that allows a user to "Decline" the install if they wish. If so, then this is very cool indeed.

I don't even know how to play those games. I walked around in Half-Life and Doom3 and found I couldn't even get out of the room. In Half-Life, I got to a wall and that was it. I couldn't get out of there and didn't know what to do about it. So, I quit the demos on both games and never played again.

That's too bad. I can play UT2004 and BF2 though. :)

Those arrow keys on your keyboard, the left and right ones, are not just for show. When you tap those keys, your character moves to the left or right. When you hit the wall, you need to hit the left and right arrows to move your character. :p

Can anyone confirm if all you have to do is get it validated once and then you get them forever? I recently got a 6600GT OC to replace a 9250. If all I have to do is put it back for just a bit while it says it's ok then I might bother doing it.

SICK!! Now if only they will do the same for Counter-Strike Source, then I'll be a really happy student.

 I believe you're required to have HL2 to play those games.

1. lost coast is nothing more than a tech demo so I don't know why they're touting it as a game.
2. these games come free if you buy HL2 anyways and seeing as you'll need HL2 if you want to play these games, you'd end up paying for them anyhow

Unless it says Free HL2 to users then that's something else but I don't see that anywhere.

So much for free

Well, he didn't miss *anything* with D3 .. if you can't figure out which way to go ... look left, right, up, down, a hidden ladder or a place to crouch ... if there is something that looks odd just blow it up - it is probably covering the way to go ... OK, that takes care of 100% of the situations in that LINEAR game.

with HL2 .. the only additional thing to note when you are 'stuck' is is use the GG or solve a silly puzzle

--and wasn't Lost Coast always free ? it is pretty short?

evidently not

ATi Catalyst will come with a bundled installation of Steam. Since Steam is only some 0.6MB in size, it will not increase download by much. This Catalyst+Steam bundling deal will last until mid-2008, but offer for ATI owners will remain

and Lost Coast was ALWAYS free ... it is a tech demo - not a game ... it is what? 10 minutes?
-if you are really slow

Yes it was always free... to HL2 owners...not to people who didn't own it...

And yes HL2: Deathmatch and LC aren't much... but it's not like they're making you buy anything...

And no you don't need to own HL2 to play Lost Coast or HL2: Deathmatch.. they'll run on their own..

Half-Life® 2: Lost Coast and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch?

Aren't these both free if you have HL2 & Steam?

(Just checking, cause i don't feel like ripping out the 8800 & swapping in my X1900 or X1300 TBH :p)

Are you on weed? :D Because, you just drop down on those planks below you, go over to the basket around the corner on the right, jump in, it falls to the shore below, and you go back up to the old fishing guy, and fade out.

How anyone can see this as anything but good, is beyond me. They didnt have to do this, and as this thread shows, some people still havent beaten HL2, or EP1 yet. Good publicity stunt by Valve though, get people caught up for EP2. Free is free, and you'd have to be crazy to see this as anything but good. But I guess some fans wont.
