Tommy is correct. This is WAY to little space to be merging into. Unless you're in traffic or it's a merge lane. The guy trying to cram into that tight spot is the jerk for endangering other people.

I can't stand it when people try to change lanes like that with that little room when our line of cars is going 80, they are trying to get over into a tiny spot going 65. what's really ticks me off is if there is absolutely NOBODY behind me and they can't wait two seconds for us to pass them and get behind me. Instead they make me slam on the brakes. So....other people have to be inconvenienced so YOU don't have to? How does that make sense?
 
i'm a courteous driver along others are too. If I see a car in the next lane approaching quickly, I let it pass before changing into his lane. And I don't impede or cars when they let me in.

Courtesy is not a reaction; if you are only courteous when others are, then you are not courteous, you are a hypocrite.

It's not that what the other guys are doing that make Tommy a jerk, it's his reaction. The correct reaction is to slow down and let the jerk be a jerk, not to also be a jerk.
 
Heh, I wish people used turn signals, most people don't even bother, and cut me off with even less than 2 car lengths.

Last week someone didn't even wait for me to slow down to let them in, they just merged while I was in the lane. I had to swerve right and hit the brakes to let them in. Luckily there wasn't anyone in the right lane.

I should have just let them hit me, but I would have to deal with getting my car repaired, dealing with insurance, etc...

It's even worse when I'm in the city or Long Island, I guess that's the reason why there are collision repair shops on every block. It's all about defensive driving for me, luckily I haven't gotten clipped yet.

That picture misrepresents the events from OP's own description. There should be another car length of space, and Tommy's car should be shown speeding up to close the space and a picture of scumbag Steve in the driver's seat.
 
This is the norm where I drive. There are parts of the country where "rush hour" is having to drive with other cars.

I remember driving ~700-800 miles back to where I live. It was a two lane highway most of the time and all of a sudden we were back on the home stretch, 5 lanes on each side. 10 lanes total. The widest highway for 800 miles was 4 lanes total, 2 on either side. But many roads were only 2 lanes, for hundreds of miles.

After being gone for a week I was like "whoa all this traffic." But its what I'm used to growing up. Must be a country boy headed to the big city highway to be complaining about something like this.

If traffic is jammed up you merge if you sense like a foot of weakness in the lane you want to be in you jump into that space all shove-like.

this is pretty normal in heavy traffic on multilane roads. You just have to sense the weak-willed driver who lets the hole in front of him become large enough to insert your nose. Those people usually don't care if you cut in front of them.
There is no other way in certain places to be able to change lane in time by being nice, like if there are 2 grade separated lanes that then become at-grade and then diverge to two different freeways.

But you should have the turn signal on when you get the intention of switching lane, and then look for the space, not the other way round. And there's no way you can do that without enough space if the cars are going at different speed, you must be able to accelerate, otherwise you just endager yourself, e.g. if the driver behind you is checking his phone and rear-ends you.

Whenever I see another driver signal wanting to enter my lane and there is only like 2 cars lengths or less between the car in front of me, I speed up and don't let the other driver in. Several of times I've had them honk at me for not letting them in D:

That's because you're being an asshole. Stop being an asshole, please.
 
I cut off a dickhead the other day.
There were two left turn lanes. The right one always has more cars in it than the left. That because about 200' after you make the left, there is a right turn that goes to the freeway. About 10 of us were queued up in the right lane and maybe two in the left.
As the light turn green, another car pulls up in the left lane. We make our turn and are still queued up to make the right to go to the freeway. The guy that pulled up last in the left lane now tries to cut in between me and the car in front of me so he can turn right. I cut him off and he yelled something I couldn't hear clearly and pulled in behind me. We were stopped at the light to turn right so I stuck my head out the window and yelled back that he could wait his fucking turn like the rest of us civilized people did. I thought he would yell and try to catch up with me but he never did. He drove like a normal person.

Many people deny and try to block other people rather than slowing down a bit and showing some consideration. Then, they claim "It's society's fault." So who makes the society?

Just slow down a bit and let the person in. Or, just wait an extra second or two and not honk. Or move over a bit so the other person can merge safely. Not too difficult and makes things easier for everyone.

If everyone is blaming everyone else, like they are doing nowadays, then who is right and who is wrong?
 
I don't know how use of indicators is taught in the US, but as I understand it, you use the indicator to indicate (to other drivers) your intention to change direction.

I've grown much more fond of the term "indicator" because I think people assume that because we call them a "turn signal" that they should only be used in actual turns. Heck no, I use them whenever it's proper to indicate my action! For example, on my drive into work, the road will fork off to the right in two separate places, and that forked road has a stop sign from the other direction to let traffic onto the main road. When a car is waiting at that stop sign and a car signals that they will be taking the fork, the car that is waiting knows that they can go. What I try to do is also help people waiting by showing them that I am not taking the fork by signaling to the left. I am technically not turning since I remain on the same road, but it's possibly helpful to drivers!

That's what it was like when I was driving outside DC one time. I realized that I wasn't getting anywhere with my turn signal being on for a minute, so I saw a space and stuck the corner of my car in it. Lo and behold, I got into the lane, but I felt like a dick for doing it. 🙁

Around here, lights sometimes don't stay green for long enough for everyone to get through if people aren't aware. To give you a hint... people are normally not aware down here. I've had plenty of times where I sat in the proper lane and had to wait more than one light cycle where I could have been a bit of an ass and just merged in front of all the pokies. At this point, if I can grab the first spot in a multi-lane turn lane, then you sure as hell bet I will cut in front of everyone (if it's safe, of course). I don't do it to be an ass; I do it because everyone is so fucking slow here. A light will turn green and five seconds later, they finally start moving. :|
 
A lot of people are accusing the op of being a troll; maybe he is, but I agree with his sentiment in this thread, and - with the exception of passing on the shoulder or in emergency lanes - I've done the same things and reacted in the same ways.
 
Had a guy the other day, I was coming up doing 6 mph over speed limit in the left hand lane during rush hour, he puts on his brakes and does 5 mph under (no one in front of him) and tracks the car beside him.

Fine, goes to 3 lanes and I go around but he floors it. I was driving maybe 1 car length back, rush hour rules, I guess it's what got him but he started long before I got behind him. I look over he's giving me really dirty looks so I formulate a plan.

I knew he wasn't local by his license plate cover and the fact that he didn't understand local custom. He also probably didn't know about the speed trap they liked to set up a couple of miles up the road so I flipped him off and floored it. Got well in front of him, used the clutch to slow down on the hill while he's flying up on me.

I couldn't do it, I saw the cop tapped my brakes and gave him the speed trap sign. He did stop messing with me after that.

damn you man! you got me all sucked into your tale of sweet revenge and then you chickened out at the end!

I did get someone like that once, but i was a while ago. Rural 4 lane, cop like t sit behind this one building, the guy punched it when I went to pass and I took him right to the building and hit my brakes hard. He shoots past and, sure enough the bop pulls him over.
 
Most people are really shit drivers that either don't understand basic rules or are conceded fucking pricks.

I drive courteously by default. I'm pretty aggressive, but not unreasonable. I will ride your ass if you are in the left lane, riding side-by-side blocking, etc. If you ride my ass for NOT speeding to a fucking red light, car in front of me, etc. I will slam my breaks and make you shit your pants. GTFO.
