My Liteon 8x4x drive "overclocks" to 12x10x. When I changed it it also got clonecd support, it already supported burn-proof.

Firmware locked? As in no firmware updates at all? I think the DOS prog. that's used to update the 0841's firmware to the 12x drive doesn't care what kind of firmware you use.

Just like I said, only heard, not confirmed yet. Some fail cases were reported in a BBS in Taiwan and were forwarded to local newsgroup and I read.

It is true or maybe not. Treat it as disclaimer. Don't point finger at me in case if you are screwed up. :)

That's pretty cool, but it's too bad my drive isn't on there. :( Seems like most of us are out of luck.

Hmmm, I have a HP9100 (9110i)... if I can change it to a 9300 the only improvement is 10 vs 8x CD-R -not really worth the risk unless many less cautious peeps have already had success. Now, if I could get my mitts on a 9500 firmware and potentially double the CD-RW to 8x then that would be tres cool.

Reactions at CD Freaks

Seems to work fine. I think I'll give it a go. Anyone have a 9500 they can extract the firmware from? It is not available for download. :)

Can my Asus 8X4X32 be overclocked? I really want to get more bang for the buck and get more out of it! Also I copy CDs quite often from time to time so more speed = CD copied more quickly!

Thanks!

Albert.

often from time to time . . . isn't that an oxymoron?
and are you implying that if you didn't copy cd's quite often then more speed != CD copied more quickly? ;) j/k

Ha, I also did this a year or 2 ago with my Ricoh 7040 4x, I bought the CompUSA version for $150, then flashed the firmware to make it a 7060 6x. Told everyone I got a 6x4x20 ricoh burner for $150, it was a steal at the time!!!

I'm running a Win2k box, here are my results with my IDE, TDK 12/10/32 CDRW...

The Good:
Win2k enabled UDMA33 mode for the drive! :D

The Bad:
- Tested Audio Ripping to see if there was any performance gains; It started out GREAT! But then drive started making erratic 'whirring' noises and the RIP speed went DIRECTLY DOWN TO HELL.
- Burning speed was uneffected, no faster nor slower.
- Tried making a Backup of Red Alert 2 (Known to use Safedisc2 protection) to see if SubChannel reading was enabled. Same results as before I jumpered... I made a successful backup, BUT, it only works on the TDK drive.

So, I took the jumper off and I'm back to 'normal' speeds again.
