Some apps stopped working, but only with data

I decided to check out Pokemon go before I went camping and it worked fine. There is a very slight reception at that camp ground and for shits and giggles I kept trying it but it was not working. i was not really surprised given the reception was so low, and did not spend much time trying given I was camping. Got back to town and now it does not work at all, unless I'm on wifi. I figured it was an issue with that app because the internet works fine (Firefox) but I noticed that other apps also arn't working on data such as speed test. Some apps work, some don't, it's weird.

Any reason why this would happen? I have full bars and it says 3G (sometimes H) My phone is a Nexus 4 with Android 4.4.3. If I go on wifi, then all those apps do work.

I did not realize there was a huge Android update pending, I'm in progress of upgrading now, I will try again after to see if it works. If I'm lucky maybe the update will fix the issue.

Upgrade did not fix it. Still happening. Some apps just fail to get any kind of connectivity over data, while others work.

Have you tried connecting through a VPN just to see if there's something funky going on at the carrier end rather than the phone?

Hmm did not even think of doing that. I opened up my VPN port to my phone's IP temporarily and connected to it over data and Pokemon Go works now. Oddly, the speed test still does not work, so I think there's more at play here but I was at least able to go get some pokeballs at the park across the street.

I might call my provider just to ask if they are getting lot of calls about this. Maybe there is an issue. Odd that the speed test is not working though, so to me that rules out the provider. Something weird with the phone going on.
