At work tonight, it was "locked" into docking station - which turns out to be not as secure as I thought it was.

Gone from my desk for about an hour, came back - laptop gone

I saw your avatar and first thought you were Evadman (who already had his laptop and truck stolen) I was thinking WTF?

Hope you catch the bastard(s) that did this.

apparently nobody saw a thing
there is a camera but it only covers the door, so I am sure whoever took it had it hidden in a bag by then :|

Damn - did you report it to the building admin? Report it to the police ASAP because if the ass who stole it tries to pawn it off, the pawnstore has to make sure it's not "hot". I hope you find the bastards who stole it.:|

Ok: Tech Question

Is there any way to find out if a certain MAC address logs back into a domain?

I am sure you see where I am going with this....

Your dns server and your router should be able to pick up mac address if it logs back in.

I called Campus Security who came and filled in incident report, but did not seem to hopeful.
Also called my boss (on vacation) to tell him the good news - he says it will not be worth claiming it off their insurance as the deductible is so high :(

All lab computers share same generic login, so it's impossible to tell who was there at the time....

I have one of those locks for the notebook but I know those things can be cut with a pair of pliers that fit in a backpack. Even if I had a Kryptonite 8mm notebook lock I still wouldn't let the thing out of my site for even 1 second.
Also get the notebook rider for your homeowner or renters insurance. I pay $50 a year for the insurance but I only pay a deductible (Between $100 and $250 forgot how much) if it's stolen ANYWHERE. So if mine got stolen out of a computer lab the insurance would still cover it. If you manage to recover it get the insurance and a kryptonite 8mm lock. Some place called directron sells them: link
