An Indian navy warship has destroyed a suspected Somali pirate vessel after it came under attack in the Gulf of Aden.

The INS Tabar sunk the pirate "mother ship" after it failed to stop for investigation and opened fire instead, an Indian navy statement said.

...

The Tabar has been patrolling the Gulf of Aden since 23 October, and has escorted 35 ships safely through the "pirate-infested waters", the statement said.

Last week, helicopter-borne Indian marine commandos stopped pirates from boarding and hijacking an Indian merchant vessel.

Taking on slow cargo boats is one thing, but why would you want to screw with a navy ship?

Also, I don't know what marine commandos are, but good job!

Edit: More from last week:

INS Tabar, a Talwar-class guided-missile stealth frigate, was cruising in the Gulf of Aden at about 10 am when it got a frantic distress call from Saudi Arabian chemical and oil carrier NCC Tihama.

Tihamas call said two to three high-speed boats, with several armed men, were trying to hijack the ship which was headed westwards. An armed Chetak helicopter, with four marine commandos, was immediately launched from INS Tabar, said a senior Navy officer.

Even as the Chetak hovered over Tihama, the marine commandos opened fire with their automatic weapons at the pirates trying to board the Saudi tankship after surrounding it. Deterred by the fire, the pirates promptly turned tail and fled in their speedboats into Somali waters.

It was around this time10.30 am or sowhen the Chetak was still in the air, that INS Tabar received another SOS call. This time, the message was that Indian merchant vessel Jag Arnav ? which is owned by the Mumbai-based Great Eastern Company and was eastward bound after transiting through the Suez Canal a few days earlier ? was being ambushed by another band of pirates in two boats about 60 nautical miles east of Aden.

The Chetak was then diverted towards Jag Arnavs position, about 25 nautical miles away from INS Tabars location, with instructions to Tihama to follow the Indian frigate for safety.

There was no need to fire even warning shots this time. Seeing the helicopter approach Jag Arnav, which had a 25-member crew, the pirates promptly jettisoned their hijack plans and sped away, said the officer.

INS Tabar then escorted the 38,265-tonne Jag Arnav ? which was carrying a consignment of barley from Odessa (Russia) to Jubail (Saudi Arabia) ? to safety. Many of the crew members on board Jag Arnav are from Mumbai.

Haha, these guys have had a busy week. Also, are marine commandos the Indian version of the Marines?

I'm betting my breakfast there's already a Steven Seagal movie about this.

Why not put 20 heavily armed army guys on each freighter? 20 versus a small group trying to board in a localized spot. Death to pirates!

That's impossible! Even for a computer.

What if it's a merchant vessal carrying automatic weapons, trebuchets, laser guns, and bows and arrows?

Who else has heard about the oil tanker they hijacked? I heard something about them getting control of about $100m worth of oil. What the hell do they plan on doing with it?!

Less than a month ago some Somalian pirates opened fire on two assault boats filled with English marines, and this time they 'threatened to sink' and fired upon an Indian warship...

I wonder if they just panic, try to bluff, or are extremely drunk/high when it happens... Or whether they are simply stupid.

News now they are ransoming it for $10M. Historically, they've done well with the ransoming.

A few days ago is when a pirate ship was approached by UK marines in small boats and the marines were fired upon, returned fire and killed two pirates and injured at least one other.

Who knows why they do it. They may be hopped up on drugs at the time (honestly, many of these off the wall African fighters are jacked while fighting) and actually feel they can win, or desperate not to get caught.

Down in the southern tip of South America some pirates tried to board a Navy research vessel. However, after that one boat blew a hole in the side of the ship in the middle east, the US Navy was under orders not to allow small boats to approach them. So one of the people on the ship opened fire with a 50 cal machine gun. The pirates raised their hands to surrender. The US Navy ship kept firing. They got the hell out of there.

Heh, I would too if I saw a .50 cal firing at me...

More like dive out of the boat and be shark bait first...

Torpedoes are expensive. Guns, even big ones, are much cheaper.

Its not impossible. I used to bullseye radio towers with my M16 back home. They're not much bigger than 2 meters.

They used to organize merchantmen and sail in convoys with protection for this type of thing.

I don't feel comfortable sending in valuable resources such as our troops and warships to combat this. I say we send in the RIAA & MPAA to deal with them instead. :)
