Tell me, if you're a guy who's only military training is getting drunk and shooting a poorly maintained rifle you looted off a corpse, what compels you to think you should fire on real soldiers who were just dispatched from a Frigate?

They (Somali pirates) are having a run of bad luck as of late, assuming this is true.
The vessel?s declared cargo consists of ?minerals? and ?industrial products?.
Somali pirates suffered skin burns, lost hair and fell gravely ill ?within days? of boarding the MV Iran Deyanat. Some of them died.

An Indian warship on Tuesday prevented two merchant vessels from being hijacked by heavily armed pirates in the Gulf of Aden and escorted both ships to safety, the navy said.

Lesson to pirates, all is not always as it seems, sometimes that helpless looking sitting duck is a Q-ship or can call in fast strike helicopters. One strike and you can be out.

Yeah, seriously. They've got a 30ft fishing boat and a dinghy and somehow they manage to take over cruise liners. All you'd need is an M2 with a tripod and couple cans of ammo.

Apparently they use rocket launchers, too, but I am surprised that given their complete vulnerability in small boats that larger merchant ships with the money to do it don't have private contractors. Surely a mounted machine gun on the front and back of a ship plus maybe a few rockets on board would do nicely.

I'm pretty sure it has to do with nations not allowing armed cargo ships to dock at their ports.

I still dont get how we have pirates in 21st century, I just read article about russian navy ship stopping another pirate ship of somali coast...

I mean they dont build their ships, so they must be stolen and numbered and traceable some how why not commission an old sub and torpedo away those punks, all you need is some old uboat and mercenaries, das boot in your ass pirates 🙂
 
Soverignty would be my guess; although Somali pirates have been preying on ships for longer than a year, it wasn't until this past summer I think that the UN authorized ships to go into the Somali waters and aggressively interdict boats. Before, I would assume the most they could do was escort (cargo) ships which would serve as a visible deterrent to pirates.

A merchant ship which carries arms will face lots of delays in virtually any port she goes to. I'm not sure owners would like to pay for delays.

Also the policy on ship is not to fight any pirates or boarders. The idea is to avoid escalating the aggression and avoid loos of life. Any money/property taken can be replaced, not lives on board.

FOOD - Thats why. The issue in Somalia started with armed groups attempting to deter non-Somali fishing boats from fishing in Somali waters. They would hijack fishing boats and hold them ransom. Of course your just fast forward a number of years and then its just more profitable to kidnap ANY boat in the area Regardless of if it was fishing or not............And you have tons of copy cats.

The same thing happened in Nigeria. In the beginning you had rebel groups in the Delta that had legitimate gripes about the deterioration of their Land from oil exploration etc. They would kidnap oil workers and ask for ransom or an attendance. NOW, all kinds of rebel groups sprang up as copy cats, just kidnapping any and everyone and causing havoc in general.

Sad story. Not all of Somali is bad though. Some parts are trying to be independent. Muqdisho is messed up though. And the people in the North sort of look down on their southern neighbors.

They is no money in it for Cheney and his defense contractors so Bush isn't going to turn the US Navy loose on these scum.
