Reality is following the plot line of "South Park." Of course, it IS the French that be doing the heavy lifting here, but, hey, we got ours in earlier in the season.

WHAT KIND OF PIRATES ARE YOU ANYWAY???

THIS is your pirate boat?

Somali pirate error ends with 5 in French brig

PARIS ? Somali pirates in two skiffs fired on a French navy vessel early Wednesday after apparently mistaking it for a commercial boat, the French military said. The French ship gave chase and captured five suspected pirates.

No one was wounded by the volleys from the Kalashnikov rifles directed at La Somme, a 3,800-ton refueling ship, French military spokesman Rear Adm. Christophe Prazuck said.

La Somme "was probably taken for a commercial ship by the two small skiffs" about 250 nautical miles (290 statute miles) off Somalia's coast, Prazuck said.

"They understood their mistake too late," he said.

One skiff fled, and La Somme pursued the second one in an hour-long chase.

"There were five suspected pirates on board. No arms, no water, no food," Prazuck said.

France is a key member of the EU's naval mission, Operation Atalanta, fighting Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden. It has aggressively tracked and caught suspected pirates and handed over at least 22 to Kenya. An additional 15 suspects were brought to France for prosecution after allegedly seizing boats belonging to French nationals.

President Nicolas Sarkozy called for tougher action against piracy last year after dozens of attacks.

A Navy vessel, unlike your average unarmed merchant vessel, has weapons.

And those pirates simply bit off more than they could chew. And presently sit in jail to reflect on the folly of their ways.

But the real question is, will they be convicted in a court of law? From what I read and all the jurisdictional problems, that may not be as easy as it should be. And given the fact that the entire government of Somalia is a basket case, there will be too many more desperate idiots where they came from.

Who has the Court of Law juristiction.
Maybe they can just stay in French captivity without formal charges.

I don't understand why the don't just return fire and let that be it. Whats the point of capturing local pirates? there are entire towns of them in that area.

Soft hearts would throw a fit at a UN power serving vigilantee justice.

Incarceration in a western prison would greatly raise their standard of living.

Why chase and capture putting themselves in more danger? They should have sunk the scum

The doctrine of universal jurisdiction asserts that under the relevant treaties, any State can board a ship on the high seas if the ship is suspected of piracy and other offenses. A ship and its occupants can be arrested for piracy by a warship of any State. Ships [I assume any vessel] without a flag are subject to the jurisdiction of any nation. National courts have upheld convictions based on such arrests.

That is not a quote but a summary from memory.

Be careful, you're on the borderline of being human. They'll crucify you for that.

Some of us reading this thread might.

I remember when Ultima Online came out I had great notoriety. I'd chase down Player Killers and had superb stats, this at the end of '97. I played with my brother. One day he decided to PK somebody. I felt bad. But it seemed like fun and if he was going to be evil and me not we couldn't really play together within the game. So I did it. And I found that my superb stats turned my brother and I into monsters and we dressed in nothing but antlers and underwear, obliterating vast scores of people over and over and over and it turned into fun and my guilt was a distant memory.

Thank you for the imagery and the story. Power allows us to be monsters. It is still a choice, but a more difficult choice without constraints, internal or external.
