Solving illegal immigration

I was talking with a co-worked and I asked since the US is having a problem with illegal immigration why not make all of them serve in some way in our armed forces for x amount of years. Once their service is completed they would be rewarded with citizenship.

Is that too crazy of an idea? If an illegal did not want to serve then he/she would be deported. Also for ones that are on the older side - could they serve as cooks, etc?

Please dont turn this thread into posts filled with flames and whatnot. I am just asking is this possible or has it even been considered? What better way to become a citizen then to serve in the military first.

Thanks!

I think this has been mentioned before. My response is no way! I do not want a bunch of people with no loyalty to the US being in charge of its defense.

You can't force them, as they're undocumented, and that would raise all sorts of other issues. I think a better option would be to allow them to serve if they choose, and after they put in their 3 years or whatever award them with citizenship.

kick them back to where ever they came from

non-citizen's already have the ability to join the US Armed Forces, crap loads of Filipinos have done this for years as a path to citizenship, all legally

the illegals snuck in here to "work" , not to join the US military. if they wanted to join the US military, they could have pursued that course of action vs. criminally entering the US

ditto.

But some serve voluntarily anyway to get a faster route to citizenship/ But as a general rule I do not think it is wise to give someone who snuck in your country illegally an m-16, grenade launcher, claymores, and whatever else.

thanks for the move.

i guess it doesnt sound wise to give an illegal some high powered weapons...but what about giving them other jobs?

and yes, you cant force them to join anything but how about giving an ultimatum of join or else you will be deported?

Some type of program like you describe already exists. My brother-in-law became a citizen this way (served in the Air Force). I'm not sure of the details, but I think you have to be a legal resident (Green Card) first.

I don't think having having non-citizens serving in your Armed Forces is a good idea (loyalty etc). The whole idea of relying upon others to defend our (American) freedoms seems truly bizzare.

If they weren't proficient in English how are they gonna communicate & coordinate with other (English speaking) troops? Seems like begging for "friendly fire".
