SOLVED: Satellite ICS: Main PC: 1100kbps, client PC 60kbps?

I was setting up a friend's PC. He just got internet satellite service from directway. Runs great on the 700mhz main pc its connected to via usb. Gets 1100 kbps (testing via http://tech.msn.com/internet/speedtest.asp). Setup ICS on PCs. NIC from main PC is connected to Linksys hub with Cat5 cable. Client PC connected to hub via Cat5. Problem is that the client PC only gets around 60kbps. I can't image that much of a bandwidth hit.

Will replacing the hub with a switch speed up the connection any?

The NIC in the main computer was a NetGear. Replaced it with a 3 Com. Now speeds for the client computers are great (above 600kbps).

I'd love to put in a router, but I'm under the impression with the satellite setup there is no way possible. Its a non-routable ip. Also, the satellite only has usb output, no ethernet/usb like cable modems.

A switch will not make any difference.

Is it a two way service?

If a Tel. Modem is used for upload I do not think there is any thing you can do about it.

Its a 2 way service in that there is an external modem for upload and an external modem for download. Is there any other way to share the satellite connection besides ICS?

Why don't you make the client pc the main pc and see if it speeds up or not. That would help to isolate the problem. Also, try different cables. Instead of ICS, some people use Linux boxes, but I don't know if that would make much difference or not.

I'm still wondering why these satellite places use USB instead of ethernet. I assume there is a good reason, but I don't know what it is.

See the other thread about Sat broadband in this forum.
Hughes makes a router for their usb modems. It is thw wd4020 or something to that effect. It aint cheap tho!

I found the problem. The NIC on the main computer was a NetGear. Replaced it with a 3Com. Now the clients get anywhere from 900bps-1600kbps. Thanks for everyones help.
