(Solved) PIO mode only...

Hello,

I seem to have an unresolvable problem. My DVD Writer can't set itself (and stay) in UDMA2. As soon as I insert a DVD, my computer stalls for some seconds and the DVD is set to "PIO Mode Only" instead of "Use DMA when available".

I have upgraded my BIOS to the latest, which is F8. No go.
I've upgraded my DVD firmware to a JL11 RCP-1 one. Nada.

My roommate have the same burner (but another motherboard) and his is set to UDMA2.

Someone have the same setting and can use the full power of the DVD drive?

Thank you for the pointers

I know it doesn't help much, but I remembered seeing a Newegg review that mentioned this.
"BIOS F3 forced CD's to PIO mode when RAID used. Fixed in F4"

They claim it was fixed.

Are you using RAID?

And someone broke his keyboard, apparently.
"WARNING ANOUT THIS BOARD. IF YOU USE SATA RAID ANY IDE DEVICES REVERT TO PIO MODE. MAJOR ISSUE ON MANY FOURMS!"

Maybe try new SATA drivers if there are any available?

I don't have any RAID setup in my computer. But my DVD Writer is using a Serillel adaptor connected to the SATA connectors controlled by the ICH8 chipset.

Have you tried connecting directly to IDE and see if DMA is supported ??

Yes, I did tried that and I get the same result.

When there is no media in the drive, the drive is set to UDMA4 (H22N works in UDMA4). But as soon as I put a CD or DVD, the drive reverts back to PIO. I also get "atapi" errors in the Event Log "The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort6, did not respond within the timeout period."

Maybe my motherboard is defective?

I solved my problem.

I simply had to set my SATA Controller to RAID/IDE instead of only IDE.

Thanks for the help! 🙂
