Have a Dell Optiplex with no Windows 7 key so I'm putting Windows XP on it. Microsoft says it doesn't support XP and doesn't host the download, any place I can find one that's legit and clean?

edit: going to look for a Dell CD disk that came with the PC.

If the Optiplex was shipped with Windows 7, just install Windows 7 using the Dell CD/DVD. It will activate automatically.

I don't have the DVD or key, unfortunately. I forgot how much of a PITA getting XP drivers working is.

Finding XP drivers for a system that never had XP drivers can be difficult.

You don't need the key to install Windows on a Dell computer, just a Dell installation disk. Did it ship with Windows 7 Home or Pro? If you don't know for sure, you can look up the service tag on support.dell.com. Let me know and I might be able to find a disk image for you.

Yes I believe it did ship with Windows 7 and was installed on it at one point, but now the HDD has nothing on it except Windows XP. I'm attempting to get Windows XP working and have gotten everything running except for sound. The real PITA is that the onboard sound card requires the UAA Bus driver, which itself requires an SP3 update. Installing SP3 on this system breaks it (BSOD Stop error 0x0000007e).

I think I might need to keep SP2 and try to bootleg the audio to work somehow. All the drivers on the Dell website are for Windows 7.

Did you try the "NET STOP intelppm" fix? I assume that you have an AMD rig?

There are some help pages that go into detail with fixes for "BSOD STOP 0x7E XP SP3".

Larry, funny thing is I have an Intel Pentium. Even though most people who get the endless reboot after updating have AMD processors and your solution works. The first error code I get is followed by 3 additional codes in parentheses. I have Googled each one of those codes and there's not ONE result displayed. So I am thinking either stick with SP2, or spend endless amounts of grief and frustration trying to update SP3 with mystery codes.

Right now I am installing XP on this computer for the sixth time today. Every time I update it bricks the install, in case u were wondering!

Seriously, if it shipped with Windows 7, I'm not sure why you are bothering with XP.

Just find a Dell Windows 7 re-install disc on ebay. Probably won't be more than $20, maybe $30.

Yeah, I was hoping to stumble upon a solution. I'd rather exhaust all my options before shelling out another $20. Maybe I won't be that lucky.

This is your answer. If you don't have the disk, call Dell and get one. Recovery media from Dell is not very expensive.

It would help if you provided the Model of Dell Optiplex you have or the Service Tag
Dell had a few versions of the Optiplex and some could be had with XP
