my new MB came today. I have never owned a mac before, and I am having a few issues.

First, when my network has WEP enabled, I can't connect to it. I put the key in correctly and all that with no luck.

After disabling WEP I was able to connect to me network, but not to the internet. Any ideas? I used the network assistant but no luck.

EDIT: For what it might be worth, I am using the 64-bit WEP. ANd I have tried entering both the password and the keyphrase (generated by the password)

**** UPDATE *****

For other noobs like me with the WRT54G here is the link you need:

Verify that your router doesn't have a MAC (Media Access Control) address filter that's preventing your wireless NIC from getting through the router to the internet. Also, take a look at System Preferences -> Network to see what your network status is for the AirPort connection. Click the Show pulldown menu and select AirPort, and click on TCP/IP to check what ip address, subnet mask, router, and dns servers you were assigned. Feel free to post them here (since they're internal).

The MAC filtering is off. And it is now connected to the network (not sure what happened while I was out, but that seems to have gone away).

However, I have a message saying that the airport has assigned it's own IP (meaning it isnt getting one from the router).

My IP is shown as 169.254.241.173 and the subnet mask is 255.255.0.0

I am going to try the network assistant again....I got a message saying that I cannot connect to my ethernet network automatically and i need to enter my IP info...

Ok, got past that (selected wrong option). Now I am using the assistant to configure my internet connection. It says to enter the network password. WHich I am entering, but it keeps telling me it's the wrong password. This is frustrating.

For whatever it's worth, I have a WRT54G Linksys router. Also, it still isn't connected. When it asks for the WEP password I dont know if it wants a key, or the passphrase.

EDIT: Making progress. I didnt know I had to put a "$" at the front of my wep password, but despite that, it still wont connect to the net, but it says it has connected to the router.

My IP is shown as 169.254.241.173 and the subnet mask is 255.255.0.0

This is a default ip and netmask that gets assigned if the computer is configured to obtain an ip automatically (dhcp) and it cannot connect to a dhcp server. You may be connecting to the wireless, but it could be that your router's dhcp server is turned off.

EDIT: Never mind, I didn't read the update at the bottom of your first post.
