I just formatted my computer, and re-installed everything. Before that, everything personal was on my secondary partition. I asked windows to point the "My Documents" folder to my secondary drive, but when I reformatted, I lost "My Documents". I feel like sh1t now.

anyways, the only reason I am posting is because I need to find software that will let me recover my deleted data. (yes I know it's the wrong forum, but I thought I'd get a faster respones from the OT section, and I'm desperate for a fast answer. Hell, I'm so desperate for a fast answer that I haven't even installed any drivers yet, except for the ones that are automatically installed by Windcrap, and my Ethernet adapter. I'm so desperate, I'm posting this from Internet Explorer. You see how desperate I am now?)

edit: read my last post

No. They weren't on that drive. I pointed the My docs to my secondary partition, and that is where i stored them

And I don't care if I'm screwed, I wanna just see if it is possible to get the data back. I wanna see it with my eyes that i can't get my data back. so please, please, please tell me about a software that will let me recover my data.

I think you may be slightly confused about how My Documents works. Check <driveletter>/Documents and Settings manually. 99.9% chance the old profile data for your account is still there, with your My Documents. WinXP is smart and doesn't overwrite old profile data on a reinstall, it just appends the computer's new name to the new profile folder to help it differentiate.

Wait, so the data was stored on your secondary partition, you reformatted your primary partition, and now the data on your secondary partition is gone? Are you sure the access rights didn't get screwed up?

shi1t

i'm totally screwed now.

i just check <drive letter>/documents and settings and tried to open the account and i got an error message saying that that folder is not accesible, and that access is denied.. i think i might have had that NTFS uber protection crap left on. 🙁

You're an administrator, you can override the accesses in the Security tab for the folder properties. Just set "Everyone" to have "Full Control" over that folder, and you should be able to get in.

i'll probably get slapped with a big ass trout for asking this, but:

how do i do what you just said? can i have a step by step explanation?

(yes, go ahead and call me a n00b, but not everyone is experienced as the gurus)

I don't have the time to go through it at the moment, but if someone else wants to elaborate, the basic procedure is this (WinXP Pro only, I think you're out of luck for Home)

1) Disable Simple File Sharing
2) Set appropriate security flags

I had already got that far myself, but the only thing is where it asks the "Group or usernames" and there is on, with SYSTEM, and and twofaced icon. How do I get a group set to everybody?

ok

i got into the folder.

but there is no My documents folder in it.

so i'm guessing that windows somehow deleted it.

i need some kind of data restoring software!

The My Documents folder wouldn't be there directly. There should be a folder called your user name, in which should be My Documents (I think-I'm on a school Unix machine atm, so I can't check).

ok

now i am going to spend some time explaining how exactly my computer was setup.

I had two partitions. C:\ and F:\. C:\ was the primary partition, and F:\ was the secondary partition. After I had initially set up my computer (before reformatting it this time around), I right clicked the "My Documents" icon, clicked properties, and changed the target to F:\My documents.

Fast forward one month and I reformat my computer cos it was borking up. I boot up Windcrap, and find the F:\My documents folder missing. Where did it go?

that's where i checked, and that's where it's missing from, because i moved it as posted in the post between my post and yours.

phew...I thought I lost everything. I just found the mysterious my documents folder. It was just renamed to <my previous username's Documents] and since my previous user name begins with an A, it was moved to the top of the folder's view. Nothing is lost, and I lub Windows 😀 That is all (no this was not a joke)

How relieved are you? That's great, man! saved your dox! 😀
This thread makes me want to do a backup.

nef > backup

as i am typing up, at the moment, i'm just considering moving everything over to a new folder, and then reformatting windows again, tmrw, becuase it left all my old stuff. hopefully, this time i won't get a scare like that again
