I have three computers hooked up on a 10 Mbps phoneline network (all computers use the Netgear 10 Mbps phoneline card). I?m running Window XP on the main computer and Window ME on the other two. Using XP?s task manager to monitor the bandwidth usage, I have been testing the throughput to both computers.
A transfer of a large file to one computer shows 100% of the bandwidth being used (this is what I want). Transferring the same file to the other computer the bandwidth meter tops out at 60% and never goes higher. Can someone tell me why the throughput to this one computer is limited to 60%. I?m thinking it might be relater the Windows XP?s Qos packet manager that suppose to manage bandwidth requirements on the network; but I don?t know. Bottom line is it takes almost 2x longer to transfer files to one computer over the other ? Help!
Swapped ME boxes like "n0cmonkey" suggested and both computers started working (i.e. both benchmarked at 100%). Swapped ME boxes back and problem came back. These are 10 Mbps phoneline cards that have a pass through jack so you can still plug in your phone. Turns out on the one ME box with the low bandwidth, having the phone plugged into the pass through jack limits the through put on that machine to ~60%. Unplugged the phone everything works fine. Thanks for all the help guys!
