--SOLVED--

I had TWO defective core i5 2500k processors! I finally received a 3rd one in the mail, popped it in, didn't change a single setting, and VOILA, HD 3000 graphics work perfectly now! Wow, seriously, what are the chances of getting 2 defective processors, tisk tisk intel.

Z68 gigabyte mobo + core i5 2500k
Every time I install the intel VGA drivers, windows 7 prof 64 bit will freeze/crash on the startup screen. For the life of me, I absolutely CAN'T get the HD 3000 graphics to work. My first 2 mobos were Z68MA-D2H-B3, and third was Z68A-D3H-B3, all with the same exact problem...

Here is the massive list of everything I've tried so far.

-Multiple versions of the intel VGA drivers, including the latest 2401
-Reinstalled windows 7, also tried windows 7 ultimate.
-Upgraded to latest bios (using QFlash)
-Installed all latest windows 7 updates
-Swapped out all ram/power supply/another core i5 2500k processor/another hard drive
-Changed any significant bios options, default, optimized, auto, etc.
-Used both DVI and the old school blue video out and different monitors. (no adapters)
-Cleared/reset CMOS
-One stick of memory

If I put in a video card, everything works perfectly. It's just the HD 3000 graphics that refuse to work, and since this is my 3rd mobo with the same exact problem, something can't be right...but I've already swapped out every part with known working parts. I've spent countless hours trying to diagnose this and refuse to give up and buy a video card. Are all these mobos defective or am I doing something wrong?

I noticed the newegg reviews for Gigabyte's Z68 mini-ITX board on newegg, many of them complained about non-functional onboard video problems.

Maybe that is why Gigabyte physically left off the video ports on many of their Z68 motherboards?

I used Gigabyte's GA-Z68MX-UD2H-B3 mobo on my new SB rig (see my signature) with HD3000 graphics and initially have some problems with shutting down the computer and resume from S3 sleep mode. The computer would hang at the "Windows is preparing to shut down" screen. Same problems occurred even after I changed out with another mobo and another i5-2500K.

It turned out that the USB 3.0 driver that came with the mobo's installation disc was the culprit of the problems. I went to ASRock website and downloaded the USB 3.0 driver there and installed on my computer and the problems went away (same USB 3.0 chip used by both ASRock Z68 Pro3-M and Gigabyte GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3/ GA-Z68MX-UD2H-B3). Now I can resume from S3 sleep mode and shut down the computer without any problems.

I suspect that the USB 3.0 driver may be causing the problems you have. I highly suggest you NOT to use any of the driver provided by the mobo's installation disc. Download all your drivers from the source (Intel, ASRock mobo website for USB 3.0 etc..).

I did not install the USB 3.0 drivers, only the intel VGA ones. I'm starting to believe it's just another defective mobo.

Are you sure that you downloaded the correct Intel VGA driver ? The latest version of Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver is 15.22.1.64.2361 dated 4/13/2011.

its NOT 3 bad mobo - I would bet money on that
In bios you have initialize display first - onboard video ?
Onboard VGA always enable ?

I used that version and it did not work. The 2401 is the latest "test" version found in the forums.

Yes and Yes, although neither of those options should technically make a difference.

So would I. Two bad core i5 2500k processors though? (the cpu cores work fine, just the graphics core could be defective, although very rare chance). Check the reviews on those gigabyte boards with IGPs though, you'll find similar problems. And for those that don't have problems, consider that most people don't use the HD 3000 graphics.

If only I had a h67 board for my main comp instead of a p67 to check the IGP, this would really help isolate the problem.

Suggest you try the lucid virtu stuff and set it for d-mode.
I will find out more when I set up a new z68 over weekend.
There is also a note in my mb box that states to shut off HD 3000 graphics in bois be installing windows with a pci-e video card.

Last time I had a mb with video outlets was p-75 with 1meg memory.

Try Intel Support since the issue might be coming from CPU itself or Intel VGA drivers. Unlikely that its the CPU though, but maybe Intel will give you a better suggestion on what to do.

Just for the sake of elimination, try Installing the USB 3 drivers.

Tried and failed.

have you tried loading up the virtu sw and enabling dual monitors?

No, can't install virtu w/out a graphics card, and I'm not sure how this will help me troubleshoot the problem.

I did talk to them, and they acknowledged that the graphics core of the processor can fail, albeit rare.

I have decided to RMA the processor to intel. If they determine it is defective, problem solved! If they say it's working correctly, I'll RMA my mobo for another brand Z68. Also, I'm going to try loading windows XP later and seeing if that makes a difference. I shall keep this thread updated and more suggestions are always welcome.

I read there are few different modes that the HD 3000 graphics can run in run.
By using Virtu you can change the mode.
Didnt get around to a win install yet so thats alll I know.

I start z68 up and only use the intel 3000 viedo cool.
Go to cpu northbridge Disabled IGD Multi Monitor
I put in a small 7900gt crash no 3d + bsod next try a 7950gt works for one game no 3d + bsod
GPU-Z shows intel + Nv video
Next I try a a 8800gt no 3d + bsod getting STRANGE.

Download the latest nv drivers
I do a CLEAN driver install from the NV panal.
This CLEAN driver install deleted all the intel drivers
Now GPUp-Z shows only Nv video
Now the pci-e 8800gt works normal

If three gigabyte boards failed (or were killed), maybe you should try another brand. I've got an Asus Z68 that's running pretty well using the internal graphics (Virtu) and a 4890 card on a dual monitor setup.
