OK, now I just feel stupid, and please, feel free to go ahead laugh out loud.

As some of you may remember, I am doing a new build with a second hand Phenom II X4 965 and GA 970A-UD3 mother board. Now, all along I have been working under the simple, mindless, assumption that this GA 970A-UD3 had some sort of onboard video support that I could use till I decided if I need, or want, an add on card.

Well, it turns out that this board has no onboard video support at all. Never mind the obvious (but not to me) fact that there is no video connection of any kind on the rear header.

Anyway, I have everything except ram. I also found out at the 11th hour that my DDR2 modules would not fit the DDR3 sockets. I know, laugh again. I am OK with it.

Anyway:

I need a video card, and have already spent hundreds more than I had planned to. This began as an attempt at a simple CPU upgrade. Yea, like that was ever going to happen.

I am looking for a good solid cheap card for under $50 if possible. If I can find a good cheap card, I could upgrade it later if I need more.
I will also consider slightly higher priced cards of the value is there, but I am not looking to do any hard core gaming with this rig. Mostly audio and video editing at some point, and not a lot of that in the very near future.

Thanks for any and all suggestions,
Roger

I am looking for a good cheap card, and the gentleman that I purchased the CPU and Motherboard from recommended the AMD 5450. Newegg has it for $30 right now.
Would this be a good bet for a solid basic video card, or is there anything better in the sub $50 price range?

I have a 6450 in my htpc and it works just fine for my needs. I would expect a 5450 to provide HD media playback and display regular computer usage type stuff. I don't know anything about video editing though, but don't expect a 5450 to be powerful in any way.

If you do no gaming then get a 6450, they go on sale/rebate all the time and have the newer UVD3 for video decoding.

If you do gaming then look for a good used card. Might be able to get a GDDR5 7750 or higher card used.

It'll put a picture on screen, and do basic HD video acceleration just fine. Other then that don't expect anything.

Depending on your needs, the R7-240 might be a good candidate if you need more then the 5450 can provide. If you can find a HD6450 it fits in between those two. By the way, if you prefer Nvidia, you may want to stick with the basic GT610. It actually has a more advanced (VP5 vs VP4) video decoder then the GT620/630... :)

This seems like a good deal:

(I'm not American, so I don't have real "feel" for your pricing)

For gaming I wouldn't go lower then GTX650/750/HD7750/R7-250X. But they're significantly more expensive, of course.

Another place to check prices of computer parts at various online stores and microcenter is www.pcpartpicker.com
You can check for a graphic card in your price range to see what is selling where at what price.

Thanks a lot, I checked and found these, and would like to know where is the true bang for the buck in this group:

Asus Radeon HD 6450 1GB - MicroCenter ($40)
EVGA GeForce 8400 GS 1GB - Newegg and Amazon ($35)
Zotac GeForce 9600 GSO 512MB Video Card - Amazon ($40)
PowerColor Radeon HD 6450 2GB - Super Biz ($48)
XFX Radeon HD 6570 1GB Video Card - Amazon ($49)
Sapphire Radeon HD 6570 2GB - Newegg ($70)
XFX Radeon HD 6670 2GB - Super Biz ($80)

I'd rule out the 8400 GS and 9600 GSO because of their age - their GPU is close to 7 years old and doesn't support directx11. The HD6xxx series are circa 2010.

How about this one of the bunch?
XFX Radeon HD 6570 1GB Video Card - Amazon ($49)

Also, would this one be a good buy at the price or should I pass, and just go with the cheap card for now?

I just got the Newegg shell shocker preview email, and this card is gonna be $10 (AMIR) from 10:00AM - 12:59PM PT.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130585

Obviously, not a gaming card.

edit: I've done some research into this card, and its max. resolution is pretty low at 1920x1200 on the DVI or HDMI. It looks like it only has a single link DVI out.

http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=01g-p3-1302-lr

I was actually considering this card as a back up for when I'm in between gaming cards, but it has the same limitation as my on board IGP with its single link DVI.

I'm not sure how that card is going to perform in never titles. It'll properly run them at low resolution/low detail. I wouldn't expect too much, 6570's weren't really "gaming" cards to begin with. They where OK in a pinch, but that's about it.

This card is $84.99 at Amazon and with Amazon prime it has free 2 day shipping.
Gigabyte Radeon R7 250 1 Gb
This would be a much better deal than the card at TigerDirect.

Considering that its based on the current-gen GCN architecture, I'm inclined to agree with you. It's a pretty good deal if the OP can afford it. He even gets mantle support. But it's still slower then a (GDDR5) 7750.

Lots of good suggestions here so far, and I have boiled them down to these possible choices, and the price range is wide

As I originally mentioned, I would like to go with a good solid cheep card (Probably like the HD 5450 below for &30, or the HD 6450 below for $48), but would at this point, possibly, consider a more expensive card (like the HD 7750 for $100), if it is truly a good value in a power card. I really don’t want to go over $100, but I don’t want to through my money away either.

I just am not up on the video processors, at this time, enough to know where the different tears are, and need a lot of guidance, and I would like to get a card on order today, if at all possible.

Other suggestions also still welcome, but $100 or less...........

Are you playing games?

if yes then spend a little extra for like this...
$109 AR 7850 2gb GDDR5
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131562

If not then...
GT610 for $30 AR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130815

6450 for $34 AR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102933

How about this for a happy medium?

XFX HD 6570 650M 1GB DDR3 HDMI DVI VGA PCI-E (Amizon Prime - $62 shipped)
http://www.amazon.com/XFX-PCI-E-Grap...ywords=hd+6570

If not worth it, I will probably go with your 6450 syggestion.

BTW, I can have either of these by Friday, so I can finish my build this weekend.

Get the 6450 over that due to price. That card has DDR3 so it will also be a dog for gaming as well. Better than a 6450 but not double better as the price is.

If you game and want cheaper get a used card. Plenty of good deals in the FS forum.

+1 outstanding price/performance ratio but only if OP is going to game fairly often. Otherwise a GT620 for $26.- after rebate is the way to go

I choose the 610 over the 620 as the 610 uses a newer core so it has the better/updated video decoding. The rebadging makes it hard to shop by name anymore.

OK, thanks for the clarification.
If I go low-ball it will be the 6450, with one last question:

I intended to mention this earlier, and I am pretty sure it is a mute point, but I do a lot of audeo - video streaming, so can I assume that the 6450 will handle those duties with no issues?

Agree. Besides moving from the 610 to 620 is not going from unplayable to playable anyway. Getting the newer video decoder is more important.
