Hello there fellas

You should know the shpiel by now :kaola: limited options for me as I live outside the great US of A. Which of these power supplies do you recommend? I need 750W

- Antec High Current Gamer HCG-750 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...amer%20HCG-750)
- Antec TruePower New TP-750 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371025)
- Cooler Master GX Series RS750 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...1053&Tpk=RS750)

johnnyguru wrote some pretty nasty *** on the GX but I have seen good reviews on the net all around. I am tempted to go with the TP-750

Have your say :)

CM GX is crap, it won't even be able to compete with a 380 watts Seasonic. I would take a 380 watts Seasonic over it.

The GX450 is itself better than GX750.

The only PSUs in CM to look for are:
Silent Pro M or M2 acceptable quality but lower than Corsair TX or Seasonic or XFX, comparable to low-mid range Antec
Silent Pro Gold or Silent Pro Hybrid, these come close to Seasonic Gold PSUs, not far behind and are probably a bit better than Corsair HX series.

Out of those options, I'd definitely go with TP-750. It's manufactured by Seasonic. But HCG-750 is also decent, it's made by Delta. The GX750 doesn't even compare to the other two.

GX750 reviews:

However.

Your rig doesn't need this much power. 750W is meant for SLI/Crossfire setups with mid-range to high-end graphics cards. Your system would happily run off of a 500W unit.

Many thanks for the review links and the insight

I need to have a talk with the shop owner since he tried to off-load me the GX and insisted I need the 750W, saying that I would need it for my overclocked GTX card

I will not be overclocking the CPU or anything else. So its good to know that in your opinion I only need 500W, could save quite a few bucks!

Just so you have proof:

http://www.guru3d.com/article/msi-geforce-gtx-560-twin-frozer-ii-review/8
System Wattage with GPU in FULL Stress = 289W
Subjective obtained GPU power consumption = ~ 162 Watts
GeForce GTX 560 - On your average system the card requires you to have a 500 Watt power supply unit.
This estimate is in actually more than NVIDIA's own minimum recommendation.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4344/nvidias-geforce-gtx-560-top-to-bottom-overclock/15
--> around 300-320W load power consumption

Both reviews use a more power hungry processor.

The only 500W unit that he carries and has decent reviews is the SilverStone ST50EF-PLUS

Any thoughts?
JonnyGuru
HardwareSecrets
Newegg

He also has a cooler master eXtreme power plus 550, but I am gonna stay away from cooler masters after what I heard/read about the GX

The Extreme Powers are awful. The only Cooler Masters you could consider are the Silent Pro and Silent Pro Gold series.

The silverstone is decent, go for it. The HWsecrets review does point out that the units protections failed to shut it down when it was overloaded beyond its rated wattage, but that's not really anything to worry about - just remember that if you buy more power hungry components, you'll need a PSU upgrade. Which brings me to the point of "future proofing"... It still wouldn't be a bad idea to buy a bigger unit, 600-650W, say. 750W is way overkill but 600-650W has a nice roomy upgrade margin for future builds. As long as you don't mind paying the extra, of course.

Thanks, another poster on another forum has said that buy the TP only if the price difference between it and the silverstone less than 30-40 bucks (its a $100 diff for me!)

I am secretly hoping they run out of silverstone so I am 'forced' to pick up the TP :p

Never heard of those.

That was definitely worth bumping this solved thread for, though.

The TP-750 is Seasonic built, the HCG-750 is made by Delta.

I'd go TP-750 hands down.

Also edit - I had accidentally voted HCG-750 thinking it was like the HCG-420/520/620 which are re-brands of Seasonic ETs. My mistake!
