Well, in war you want to control as far "above" you as you can...the US does good in war because we have a policy of controlling the air. It seems like space is a natural extension.

But do we really need to focus on this NOW? Aren't we fighting terrorists? Do they have satellites? Do their supporting countries?

Here's an old site: http://cryptome.org/sh/sh.htm (military/space related info)

The article describes orbital weapons platforms. That has not been done yet (that we know of).

too bad the ASAT piece of crap doesn't work most of the time, which is why new tech is being discussed

Gotcha. I know that plans and experiments have taken place since the earliest Reagan "star wars" days... it seems the knowledge and technology are making it now possible. Hmmm....

This is a logical step. In order to maintain US military superiority orbiting weapons platforms appear to be neccessary. Remember, we don't just want to match the rest of the world..we need overwhelming superiority.

Imagine the advantage of being able to hit ground targets anywhere in the world at will from a constellation of orbital weapons systems. No waiting for cruise missiles or bombers etc. Just pinpoint targeting from above.

This may even be more feasible that that BS missile defense system.

the problem with putting weapons into space is that if space warfare were to occur, our orbit would be littered with 100,000MPH garbage for tens of thousands of years setting us back and making space travel and satellites impossible

well done, Shrubya

Assuming the orbital system has an anti-missile component, I doubt the world's nuclear powers (those that are not our friends) would take this too well.

You could easily clear it away with nuclear blast.
