Solution for Stinky Carpet?

My roommate and I took over a lease and the former residents left us a gift, stinky carpets

It's fine if we leave the windows open but now that we have AC and it's been 100+ weather, I'd like to keep the windows closed and crank up the AC. The problem is the odor in the living room. I've used baking soda a few times by spreading it over the carpet, letting it sit and vaccuming it up. It's helped a little but I'd like a pretty permanent solution if possible short of getting the carpets professionally shampooed. That's something they do when a tenant moves out.

Desperately need some help since I'll be putting my workstation in the common area from now on.

I've done that before for my parent's home but I wanted to see if there are other options since I'd rather not do that

-Hire a professional to steam clean the carpets

-Lay new carpet.

Febreze will just fade away over time and you'll probably still have the smell. ::shrug::

If I were you I would clean it/get it cleaned for sure. Emptying a few bottles of Febreeze in there might cover up the smell but it won't be as good as actually having clean(er) carpet.

Looks like the local Safeway rents out Rug Doctor for $20 plus ~$15 for fluids. I thought I'd be more than that

There is the Pet Odor stuff (the name evades me right now) that uses enzymes to hault the decomposition process of whatever was spilled on the carpet, eliminating the source of the odor. I woudl steam clean it with that stuff mixed in with the water.

Just get it steam cleaned either professionally or do it yourself. You're only gonna have to do it once. Why bother with quick fix ideas when they're just gonna cost you money and not help much in the long run.

it depends on what caused the smell - I was in the same situation not long ago. Our carpet smelled because we rented a cleaner ourselves, but my roomate totally soaked the carpet w/ it. If you get the carpet too wet, it seeps into the padding, which stinks to high hell if it gets wet. If that's the case, you need to get a "carpet ionizer" - or somethign like that.
