Solid System for $1300?

Time to replace the antique and I figure this looks like a solid setup thats somewhat 'future proof'.

Mobo: Gigabyte DS3 Rev 3.3 - $130
CPU: Intel C2D 6420 ~$183
CPU Cooler: Thermalright XP Ultra 120 Extreme - $55
Memory: OCZ 2GB (2x1 GB) PC 8500 - $170
PSU: Seasonic S12 Energy+ 650 HT - $145
GPU: X1950 Pro 512MB - $165 (Plan to see if the R600 has any effect on 8800s and will replace the X1950 when that time comes)
HD: Seagate 400 GB 7200.10 - $89 x 2 = 178
Soundcard: Creative Labs Audigy 4 Pro - $89
Case: Antec 900 - $80
Optical: Lite-On 20x DVD Burner - $35
Total (w/o Shipping) - $1229

I have a 24" Dell 2405 LCD monitor, Logitech Z-5500s, MX1000 Mouse and Keyboard combo already also.

Is that seem pretty solid for the price or could I save some here and there?

It does look like a very good rig (and good idea with the 1950pro). It seems a hair expensive, but then again you've got everything down to the sound card in the budget, so I think you've done pretty well for yourself.

Where did you price that stuff out at? I'm just curious if did it at newegg or used an engine like pricegrabber.

Rig looks good. I would change the GPU to at least a 8800GTS 320MB.

he's holding out for r600, so it'd be a bit pointless to spend that kind of $.


why an audigy 4? why not an x-fi? if you're trying to 'future proof' i think an x-fi would be a better choice.

Yeh the Corsair HX620 620W is a good choice too, especially for the AR price of $123.90.
I was also checking out the Silverstone Olympia OP650 650W for $127.00.
I am not sure which of the three: Seasonic S12 650W, Corsair HX620 620W, or Silverstone Olympia OP650 650W is best.
I think they are pretty much the same? and maybe let the price be the maker?

The Silverstone has a SINGLE +12V (54A), the Seasonic has FOUR +12V rails (combined for 52A), and the Corsair has THREE (but really 1?) (50A). I am not sure if that really matters since I am pretty blank at PSU knowledge.

Well I grabbed most the parts from deals over the last few months.
The Seagate 400GB 7200.10 Perpindicular drives I snagged two when Outpost had them for 89.99 each a few months back.
I also snagged the Audigy 4 Pro for 89.99 when it retailed for around 199.99 at buy.com a few months back.
I got the Antec 900 cases AR from Compusa.
The CPU is based off the April 22nd Intel price cuts.
The X1950 Pro 512MB is the AR price on the Sapphire card.
The $170 OCZ memory is the price Frys.com has AR.
The CPU cooler is from Froogle prices, which lead me to a decent seller. Same with the Seasonic PSU, froogled it.

The Audigy 4 Pro got some pretty good reviews, plus it was cheaper... haha not anymore I suppose and plus I wouldn't have grabbed a sound card because onboard is really decent now but I guess I couldn't resist it unfortunately, which jacks the price up and makes it look overpriced??? Or maybe all these parts are had for cheaper elsewhere? IF anyone knows of better sellers do inform me! Thanks!

You just have to catch deals when they go on. The 900 was at one point $60 AR for example.

Check out our HotDeals forum for such great deals. This method of piecing a computer though requires patience on the pc market. It is a constant battle of urgency/need/desire vs price in the pc world.

I haven't built a computer is years, but I am sure the basic concept of building is: buy one of the best motherboards and power supplies so they can last you for years. Everything else is pretty much plug and play but those two. At least thats the concept I have been taught to go by.
