I know this is probably a dumb question, but would this frame work without connecting to storybox.com? I seem to read that this frame will expire in 10 days without connecting to the Storybox network (which seems to be closed now and not accepting anymore connections), will this one work continuously without it?

Are you sure this does not require activation through storybox.com? I've searched the web and can find no mention of a version of the Kodak Digital Picture Frame that does not require activation from through storybox.com even just to view pictures from a CF card. If you can link to something to verify this is not the case this frame, I would really appreciate it as it would be cool to have one of these.

From storybox.com:

"IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PROSPECTIVE STORYBOX NETWORK
MEMBERS AND KODAK SMART PICTURE FRAME OWNERS

The STORYBOX Network is no longer accepting registrations for new subscriptions or memberships. If you are not a registered subscriber or member of the STORYBOX Network, you will not be able to use the Network to store images and/or to share images with a KODAK Smart Picture Frame owner. If you own a new KODAK Smart Picture Frame but have not yet registered with the STORYBOX Network, you may return your Frame to Kodak for a refund of your purchase price plus the shipping costs incurred to return the Frame to Kodak. Kodak regrets any inconvenience that this may cause.

To arrange for a refund or for more information, please contact our customer support representatives at 1-800-235-6325."

Since some folks have been a bit confused about this frame, a quick clarification. The original $300 version of this frame actually REQUIRED periodic access to the website in order to stay functioning---a bizarre design feature but one which guaranteed Kodak a $9.95/month (or something like that) revenue stream from any user who expected the frame to keep working. Unfortunately Kodak did a poor job of spelling out that little gotcha to its customers, many of whom didn't really want the monthly bill---they just wanted a LCD display device for their own digital pix. Well, kudos to Kodak for reacting to many complaining customers by re-designing the frame to meet that need. The new version ---which is the one turning up on eBay and at Compgeeks, but almost nowhere else (yet)--- apparently retails for $99.99 and does not even have a phone jack. You just dump up to 36 images into the frame via a Compact Flash card, and it puts on a slide show. That's it, no website connectivity even if you want it. The original $300 frame is being taken off the market, and I understand the online service is being ditched altogether. Glad I held out and didn't part with $300!

I picked up a Kensington Digital Photo Album Plus (available for $113.74+s/h at provantage.com) which seems to be very similar to the Kodak. Picture quality is decent (a little washed out) and the viewing angle could be better, but all-in-all a pretty neat toy. The Kensington model just uses built in memory to hold 24 pictures (@640x480). The resolution is actually decent for this sized screen.

I actually got it from Outpost.com (free shipping) and will pricematch it to Provantage.

Yeah, the Kodak frame is great but I shelled out $300 for it just a few months ago to give to my mom and the freakin service has been totally intermittant ever since.

I am REALLY pissed about that.

The frame itself, display etc is of excellent quality.

Good thing the one being discussed here is the one that does not require the phone service.

Does anyone know why it says it holds a maximum of 32MB, yet you have to leave the compactflash card inside? If I stuck a 128MB card, doesn't that mean I can store more than 32MB?
