Soldiers at US border posts to be armed

Boarders, Language, Culture. Primary concerns of every country in the world except the United States.

Just curious, what good are they if they're not armed?
>>

Good question considering they get shot AT.

I was amazed when I saw how many times per year people force their way through the US/Mexico border. It worked out to more than once per day, people smashing through barricades, etc.

Crazy stuff.

Yeah damn snowboarders...skateboarders...wakeboarders...oh and don't forget board boarders.

I'm going to chime in here on the other side. First of all, military members shouldn't even be doing such work to begin with, that's what we have the Border Patrol service for. Using soldiers for such tasks is both stupid and a waste of resources.

Secondly, in the military, carrying a sidearm domestically is truly a PITA.... signing out daily from the arms room, accounting for ammunition, the unending rules of engagement lectures from the boys at the AG lawyer team.... you just increased the average soldier's workday a good two hours, minimum. And from the grunt's POV, this will hardly be something which will make their life any simpler or make them feel more secure.

<< an attempt to avoid sending an undiplomatic message to Mexico >>

That's a laugh. I guess they never noticed that their counterparts south of the border are carrying automatic rifles.

To drag the 2nd Amendment into this, that article ABSOLUTELY debunks the myth that the National Guard is our STATE MILITIA who's right to be armed cannot be infringed.

Obviously, the 2nd Amendment refers to individuals, but I thought I would point out this contradiction to the purposefully-ignorant folks that pretend that the 2nd Amendment refers to the National Guard.

Why do you hope he's joking? Every other country I can think of has similar rules and regulations regarding shooting people trying to cross their borders illegally, it's a case of protecting national security in many instances.

We are actually acting a little late here, I don't know what the hell took so long. I mean we have millions of illegal immigrants here already, so i'd say it's about time we start picking them off when they try to break our laws before they even enter our country, I mean if they are willing to break laws to get in, imagine what they'll do once they succeed in getting in.

If you can't think of instances of what they might do once illegally here, i'll help you, they will steal our jobs by illegally working for a pitance. They will rob and steal since they cannot work legally. They account for a great amount of our crimes in areas around borders, i'd venture to say they account for 40-50% of criminals in those areas, although I have no data on that, even though it would likely be easy to find if you look. They don't deserve to be here so we need to keep them out and think about our own welfare before we start letting them in legally, forget illegally.

Whats wrong with shooting them? They don't belong here..they can come here legally, no problem, but shoot the bastards who hop the fence.

and I bet you would love to shoot them yourselves, you filthy bastards. They are human beings as well, and most of them illegally cross the boder in search for asylum. Sure they are not legal, but why should we shoot them? We should take custody of such trespassers and detain them and take action against them. And for you veryape, how the heck will shooting them solve our country from being safeguarded? What, just shoot them to death? Wouldn;t locking them up perform the same outcome? How old are you? Grow up and become civilized!!!

You people who think violence is the answer disgust me
BTW, I hate it when illegal immigrants cross into our country and steal our jobs, money, and account for alot of the widespread crime, but geez, investigate further before you speak.

Just an aside. What's the news on Bush giving amnesty to 11 million illegal immigrants already here?

Well if they're unarmed, how are they different from having accountants standing there? Soldiers fight, it's what they do, give 'em the tools to do their job.

Oh, you mean all the jobs that millions of Americans on welfare had already been refusing to do for how many decades?

<< Whats wrong with shooting them? >>

Oh, I don't know perhaps murder, lack of judical review.

<< According to the Pentagon, the soldiers are doing low-risk work that does not require side arms. They are searching shipping containers, helping direct traffic and generally supporting the law enforcement officials already at the border crossings.

"They were not likely to be placed in a position where they would use force, either deadly or another kind," the official said.

If the soldiers are threatened, armed INS or Customs agents are supposed to protect them.
>>

As if I really want to depend on someone else in a situation where deadly force is authorized.
