I'm not really sure, I cheaped out and got a modern Onkyo TX-SR501 HT reciver since I needed something for my TV / HT setup as well so I'm not to familur w/ Vintage amps, my father is more into that stuff and has some high powered gear from the eairly 70's still going, so I'd have to consult him :) (he's the family audiophile, I'm just the computer geek :) hehe )

You might wanna just dump the idea of "PC Speakers" altogether.

IF you go to a music store (like, a place to buy equipment and instruments) and buy some nice monitors.

I got a pair of digital monitors (~$350.00 each) and connect them to the optical digital output of the sound card ... mighty fine sound.

I originally bought 'em for a midi keyboard setup and tried 'em on the PC and left 'em there.

Try it, you'll like it.

Ditto. Based on price/performance, high quality headphones are very hard to beat. If you prefer speakers, look at Cambridge Soundworks (maker of some of Creative's speakers), they make some very nice stereo speakers that won't require a receiver.

Aren't there sub $100 sound cards that are regarded as a lot better than the Audigy2 for music? From what I understand it's rather crappy except for games.
Monster cables aren't worth it either. I'd just look into one of those other sound cards, not sure that I remember right now...

If you go to the klipsch forums, you'll see that quite a few people have had good results replacing the satelite speakers with higher quality satelite speakers.

At least that could hold you over until you can afford a proper reciever and sub.

BTW, I really hope you aren't listening to 128kbs mp3s...

Thanks

I don't think audiophile quality exists in the sub-$500 range....and even that's the very low end of that category. One of my old roomates does music and techno composition, DJ's, and sound editing. He's not even a pro (sorta....he makes a little $$$ on the side with it) and he spent $500+ per studio monitor....not to mention the hardware....but damn does it sound niiiiiice.

For just 2 channel, the chaintech AV-710 is a good choice. For multichannel the M-audio revolution is supposed to be very good. There are certainly more audiophile geared cards too that are less mainstream than those.
