Sold working motherboard on eBay - 'certified techie' says its a dud.

I just sold my gf's motherboard on ebay a week or so ago, and the guy I sold it to is now saying it won't boot. The motherboard was a MSI 6577 socket 478 motherboard... version 3.1

This is what he said hes tried:

"I received the board, but it will not post. I am a certified technician and have checked all my components. Any Ideas "

"using a celeron 2.8 and 1 stick of 512 ddr my customer's original board is a version 4.1 and works fine with the same processor and ram except the rear usb ports are physically damaged."

"I have re-checked all connections, the video card is on-board, but I also tried it with and add-on PCI video card. The board powers up, I.E. Processor cooling fan runs, but I get no memory beep, or video output. Also I have reset the bios jumper, and gone as far as to replace the bios coin battery. Still no video output"

"DDR 333, DDR 400 won't fit in a slot for 333 or lower, Tried 2 different sticks 1-256, 1-512
tried them both seperately and together no video output"

"Yes they are both 184 pin modules but a 400 Mhz memory stick has a seperator in a different location so that it won't snap into a slower slot.
I bought a new memory stick today, and tried it, I also tried another video card still no output. I will ship the board back to you, if you can get it to work with your components, I will buy your components, otherwise refund my auction costs. "

In between were my responses, such as trying different ram, resetting the bios, etc.

I'm just in a bad position because 1) this somehow sold for $108 and i already spent it upgrading my gf's computer 2) the cpu that i was running it with is sold and gone, so i have no means to test it 3) the fact that this was working when i sent it, means guy could have fried it himself...

Any advice?

Did he pay with PayPal? If so, you're screwed. He can file a claim with paypal, and he'll probably win.

I'm not sure if I'd go that far... paypal is pretty hard to get a refund from.

I'd be more worried about your ebay feedback.

If your shipment was insured, file a claim.

ddr 400 won't fit in a pc133 slot. not sure how much i believe he's a certified technician. well, one with a clue anyway.

wow. just wow.

this is why you sell things on ebay AS IS. too many "certified technicians" that don't know wtf they are talking about.

Yeah, I shipped via fedex, insured for $100. I'll look into that. And yes, it was via paypal. And yes, this guy sounds like a dolt.

"separator in a different location"...have you tried telling him to just turn the ram sticks around? maybe your mobo has the slots inverted from how he's used to. i know the two mobos at my house have em inverted from one another.

lots of misinformation here

paypal is not difficult to get a refund from. in fact i believe if there is no proof the item was sent (ie tracking number) anyone can claim the item was never received and get their $ back.

having $ in an account has no bearing on a refund. the seller's account will have a negative balance or their card on file is charged

If he has a prescott it might not be compatible with older S478 boards.

EDIT: I cant find the "MSI 6577" on google or MSI's site, but im willing to bet that he is using a Prescott on an incompatible motherboard. I got some strange google results for an HP mobo with MSI 6577 chipset and its a really old i845G chipset, that was made long before Prescotts came out, if thats the case... problem solved.

(crosses fingers) 😀

EDIt2: I found this link, not sure if this is the mobo you had.

The only info I could find for the motherboard was on the HP website as well. If his celeron is Prescott based, that is why it isn't working, as that revision of the board only supports williamette/northwood 400mhz and 533mhz FSB, it does not support Prescotts.

The 4.x revison of the board supports northwood/prescott 400mhz and 533mhz FSB chips.

Nope paypal cannot touch your credit card. even if they do its easy to get it back from your cc.

He probably fried it himself. I bought a used ipod on ebay one time. Plugged it in to a fairly new built computer. Didn't work. Found out i plugged the usb header in the wrong way somehow. dead ipod. That was my fault, I could have said it did not work when i got it. That would be crappy.

Another instance I sold a WAP on ebay. I never even used it. Opened the box read the manual put it in the closet. The guy emails me and says that parts are missing. WTF!? I refunded him his money and called Motorola because it should've been under warranty. Motorola does nothing because the warranty somehow expired even though i only had it for 2 months. (Don't buy from woot.com unless you want to deal with this). Anyhow, yeah so the guy had his money and the product and gave me negative feedback to boot. So i returned the favor. 🙂

So yeah, there is my ebay experience. Some people aren't honest , and it would seem that he is trying to one up you.

Posting your side of the convo will help the situation make a bit more sense IMO. Good luck!

Here's another possibility on the mobo...

I've also seen it referenced as the Giovani as noted before.

I'm going to assume that, as other posters have stated, he's using a Prescott based Celeron. This means you did not sell him a defective motherboard, he's trying to use an incompatible part with it. In that case you are not at fault and not required to refund his purchase, UNLESS you stated on ebay that it accepts prescott chips or said anything to the effect of any socket 478 CPU. "Any" being the operative word.

Alright, sounds like good information. He's probably using a prescott. I'll probably get a reply tommorow.

But knowing that his customer was using a v4.1 board is a good indication that it is indeed a prescott.

And yes, definately an idiot for buying it for over 100. LOL

Thanks guys for the input. 😀

"Socket 478 for Intel P4 Williamette and Northwood processors 1.4GHZ to 2.8GHz or higher."

Nice.

Since it sounds like he's confused with RAM, there's a possibility he won't know how to check the processor. Have him take a digital pic of the processor with heatsink and grease removed so you can read the numbers yourself. Personally I don't trust anyone.

LOL good thread. I guess with ebay it's like gambling you either hit the jackpot and get dolts like this to shell out 4x what that board is worth - or you get dolts like this who can't use it and demand a refund. Let's hope you can convince him to keep your winnings.
