Edit: Deal is over- both are sold out!

Saw this over at Tiger Direct under clearence...

Link

Western Digital introduces the company's first 10,000 RPM low-profile Ultra2 SCSI hard drive! This 18.3GB drive features a 3.5" low profile case, 10,000 RPM, 6.6 ms seek time, 2MB buffer, 80 pin interface and is Ultra SCSI and Ultra2 compatable. Get two at these prices!

6.6 ms seek... now I just need my dual athlon MSI board...

EDIT: I just saw that they have Lexar 80 meg 4x CF media with the built in usb connection for $59!!! The size is right, but the built in USB wins me over! It looks like you need to buy the cable seperately for USB connectivity... Link

note that the scsi drive is 80 pin, which means most people will need an adapter (usually runs between $10 and $20), but that's still an amazing price for that drive. I've heard bad things about tigerdirect though... resellerratings gives them a 2.9

If you're willing to take the chance... stock up and get a blazing raid array for about as cheap as you'll ever find

locovaca ... RE: the Lexar CF.

You said: "...the built in USB wins me over." But, from the site you linked:

USB interface enabled through JumpShot cable, available from Lexar Media.

This suggests this CF card does NOT come w/ the JumpShot cable -- no? I've seen Lexar's CFs bundled 2 ways -- 1 with, 1 without a JumpShot cable. Not sure what you meant by "built in USB" but if you need a USB CF reader, it might help to call TigerDirect to confirm what you're getting here.

Good price, BTW. Thanks for the post.

Tiger Direct is not a great vendor, but the price is. I take the chance for this price. This is a very good post, thanks.

Fast is definately a relative term. Depending on the application, the newer ide drives with the 20+ gig capacity platters could definately be faster than this drive. Still, this is a good price for a 10k scsi drive.

Anyone know if this thing comes with a warranty from Western Digital? Also, anyone know the model number on this drive?

7200 rpm IDE drives faster than SCSI 10,000 rpm? Show me the numbers, my friend.

There is a review at Storage Review... the drive is a Western Digital Vantage WD183F. The drive was reviewed 12-99, but was plenty fast (albeit slower when compared to to higher end 10,000 rpm drives, but definitely faster than 7200 rpm)

Now here's what we need to finalize this Hot Deal...a good deal on a 80 pin (SCA) to 68 pin (U2W) adapter!

Yeah, I would like to get a couple of these puppies and run them in RAID 0....if I can find a decent deal on SCA adapters, then I probably will bite

I am interested, but not scsi sayy. What would I need to use this drive on a Abit BE6_2 board? If somedody knows where to get the adapter I need please let me know? I am currently using a 20 gig WD Expert. Would this be a decent improvement in general?

Lexar builds USB circuitry right into their CF cards. That way, they can make the reader (JumpShot cable) much cheaper ($7.99 as opposed to $20-$30 for others). On the downside, the JumpShot is only compatible with Lexar media.

So, cards dont actually come with the cable, but that is what they mean by "USB Enabled"

As far as the whole speed issue, a newer EIDE drive such as a 60GXP will be faster in raw MB/s throughput. The higher platter density sees to that. As far as access times, the WD will have the edge on the IBM, thanks to the decreased rotational latency (high RPM) and overall faster seek mechanism. As to which is 'better,' it depends on how you use your disks.

Unless you do something like Video Editing or the like where you have a constant stream of data, lower seek times are more desireable because hard drives are constantly seeking back and forth, and rarely come across a large chunk of data that needs to be streamed, advantage 10,000. I'm not trying to start a debate, but I think that the group of people needing a high sustained transfer rate are a very small minority...

Wouldnt these make for great OS and Application drives, then have large storage ide drives for data?

That way the fast seek times ensures your apps run fast, and the ides make it so that you have good throughput when saving/transferring data?

Yes and no. Your explanation of "USB enabled" is right-on. But Lexar's CF cards do come with JumpShot cables -- at least some/most of the time (see below). For example, we recently bought the same Lexar CF card both with and without a JumpShot cable -- at the same price and at the same time! And both were available free in March/April during Lexar's "Up to $90 Rebate" promotion.

Here's a quote from Lexar's web site (posted in an earlier thread):

JumpShot is available FREE for a limited time when you purchase our USB-enabled CompactFlash. JumpShot is also available separately for a street price of $19.99. JumpShot ONLY works with USB-enabled CompactFlash cards.

Just a comment on the WD 10krpm 18gig 80pin SCSI drives... it appears they have them
listed 3 times on their site, each with a different price and some mention refurbished
while another does not. Do a search on their site for "wd scsi" to see what I mean...
The ones that mention refubished actually are priced HIGHER!
