Sold my F150. Need something else

Well I ended up selling the truck. I paid 32k for it 18 months ago. I have been thinking about it for a while. I wanted to see what the dealer would give me. I drive to two of them. First Honda place offered 25K. I then went to a Ford dealer and they gave me 27k. Blue book is 27.5k. 😕 Wife said let us think about it. We got in the truck and I knew the second I got in it I was selling.
I got to thinking Jules (ducati guy)was right about renting a truck when needed. Just on my insurance alone I saved 260 over 6 months. Calculated that up and that is 13 times over 6 months I can rent a truck from lowes.
Now I'm looking at the polar opposite cars. I want something that sips gas. Would prefer a hatch type car so my truck rental or borrowing brothers f150 is kept to a minimum. I'm open to anything with 13k the absolute max but really want 8k range.
Thanks is advance

M3?

;-)

I'd say a used Honda Fit or Hyundai 5door touring. Maybe Mazda 3...would definitely be fun to drive....although the 2.3 is thirsty.

Not much in the American back catalog that seems compelling.

Buying new, I would look at the Focus and VW golf TDI.

8k range will get you an '08 to '11 Focus if you are open to a manual. I have an '08 5Spd S Coupe, it's my girl's car now until we get a 4-door to replace it (have a new baby, and baby stuff is huge, lol).

Anyway, the car was dead reliable as can be. I got ~33-35 mixed 60-40 city/highway driving, and 40+ easily on long road trips doing 70-80mph, with luggage, A/C, and a passenger. I'm 6'4" and 250lbs, and it was always really comfortable as well.

The motor is a 2.0L i4 Duratec (same block as Mazda3i), has a timing chain, and with 140hp and only 2550lbs, the car moved quite well. As a matter of fact, my new 2012 Scion TC 6MT with a 180hp 2.5L isn't any faster, which is kind of silly.

The Focus has hard plastic on the doors, and isn't pretending to be anything it's not. It's just a good economic car that drives well. If you feel like it, you can snap on the suspension setup from the Focus SVT, it's all plug and play. The SVT Focus had better slalom times than same-gen Boxster S and Corvette Z06, if that tells you anything. But even stock it's excellent. Some body roll, but it grips well and responds quickly due to the very light weight.

CAVEATS :

It's not a beautiful car.
The ones with the fake fender chrome are hideous (easily removable).
The 4-speed auto is bleh, the manual is infinitely better (I think many poor impressions of the car are due to the fact that the extra weight and bog of the auto ruins the experience, but my personal opinion is that i4 + manual is the only way to live life with a cheap car).

Good stuffs :

Stock stereo is very nice, has ipod/mp3 player jack, cd player plays mp3/flac/aac/etc.
Shockingly large trunk for a compact.
Heaps of headroom and legroom (one of my friends is 6'6", and had no problem riding long distance in it).
Easy to work on.
No timing belt to eff with.
Parts are dirt cheap.
Safety ratings are very good.
Unriced Focus = invisible to cops.

Another thought...used Versa hatch. Won't be much fun, but should be pretty utilitarian.

Yep, pretty reliable. And without the inflated prices that the competing Fit and Yaris have. The CVT is better than the 4-speed slushbox in the Yaris, lol.

The 2013+ Versa should be entertaining, the earlier ones didn't have very much power, 120hp with 2600lbs is just enough to be drivable.

15% depreciation for year and half is actually not bad at all, how many miles did you put on it?

2003-04 Honda Civic SI? My buddy had one, surprisingly fun to drive and awesome seat/steering wheel. Or the first gen SVT focs?

I put 25k miles on it. I thought I got a great deal especially when selling was as easy as signing a couple forms

Might be able to find a nice 2003-05 WRX for around $13k if you look around.

Just a thought. Not exactly a fuel sipper though and it would probably be pretty high mileage at that price range. How many miles do you drive daily?

I had a truck for a couple years but got rid of it for pretty much the same reasons as you did. Didn't really need it and it got HORRIBLE mileage.

Just commuting to and from work I'm putting 15,000 miles on my car annually. I'm definitely looking for something more fuel efficient when I eventually replace my aging Maxima but I want it to be a midsize 4 door sedan at least.

The normal Mazda3 is considerably more fuel efficient than the turbo Mazdaspeed3. Either one would be fun IMO. The Mazda3 hatch has a lot of usable cargo space with some light-duty tie-downs even.

If you're looking for a gas sipper hatch back: Mazda3 5-door Sport (2.0L engine) should be on your list. I suggest manual transmission only for reliability.

Versa is a piece of shit. You guys recommending this car must work for Nissan LOL!

I've driven one. It is a basic econo-box, nothing more. There is nothing exciting about it whatsoever. It is a conveyance. So are the other cars you mentioned.

He's not looking for a driving enthusiasts car, he is looking for a basic, cheap, utilitarian car that gets decent gas mileage. Honda's are great, but not a very good value.

Anyone ever actually get a fiesta at close to 13k? Or is that just the carrot prices to get you in?

hatchback Fiesta's are over $1000 more than the sedan base price -

With 2014's eing a huge redesign for Ford on the Fiesta, you should be able to get some big discounts in the next few months.

I think for $13K, its very doable.

Honda Fit would also be a great choice, may cost more up-front, but resale value and cargo space are both huge plusses.

You got a killer price on that, absolutely killer on the trade-in., such a small loss in 18 months is nuts. One of my current cars is 20 months old and I'll be calling the dealer this week to see what a hit I'll take. I stole it when I got it, so it may work out ok in the end. Want to replace it with something bigger. I agree about the truck, though; just borrow when you need one.

used car prices are even stupider now than ever before. I almost bought a 2008 Highlander exactly two years ago. A 2008 Highlander today with the same miles as the one I almost bought is the SAME PRICE as it was two years ago. I don't get this, screw these idiots buying these late model vehicles at prices like that. I will just buy new. I'm on my third lease now and the residual on some cars is so freaking high right now that the lease rates are just crazy low. I can get $22-24k vehicles all day long leased at $210/month.
