I want a card that I can water cool and best bang for buck. Ya'll know a lot some maybe I can get some help. I've read some people say 6970 are not worth the money.

What resolutions are you planning to play on? What is your system specs? Games you're planning to play?

All of these factors need to be considered for us to give you the "best" advice.

🙂

If I were to go with a NVIDIA I would get the 560 Ti but I'm hoping to stay with Radeon. I will be playing: Bulletstorm, Brink, Black Ops, Bad Company 2 and I will be using various programs from CS5. It will be liquid cooled.

If your a BC2 fan like i am. A 314 dollar 570 puts a hurting on the Amd competion in BC2.

The 6950 and 6970 are basically the same card (reference design). the 70 just binned out stronger. Many people have had great success flashing their 50's to 70's... And if by chance it didn't handle it, it's just as easy to flash it back.

Anyhow, that would be a 6970 for the mid to high 200's. Even with the above chart, it's a whopping 2.1FPS slower than the 570. Whiptie-doo... 'put a hurtiong on', is anything but... Even at stock speeds for the 6950, it's only 8.4 FPS behind...

Either brand is a good buy right now though. Both will serve you well. Personally, I prefer the better pictures of the AMD but with tech today, it's really splitting hairs and I hear nVidia is bringing out a new AA mode to compete also on that tiny arena. Basically both card options are killer at the moment. Go with the one you prefer. Depending on who's got a sale at the moment, one can be a better buy than another. But the one catch right now is the 6950's flash-ability to the 6970's capabilities in many cases.

I'm still wanting to stay with Radeon just because I plan on crossfire in the future.

All you had to say is that you're a fanboy. All good 🙂

I love people that throw out excuses like "Ohh it's only 2.1fps slower". It's still slower. Thats all that matters

I would get a reference 6950 2gig. If you aren't too concerned about price, my choice would be Asus.

Thank you SirGCal, it is nice to have an explained reason. Now what water block can I use. I have looked at the EK and Koolance but the card is not listed.
Also I have AMD motherboard and processor so I would like to keep the same technology.

People can generally buy a 6950 2GB (at least the reference design) and unlock the extra shaders making it equal to a 6970. The major difference at that point is that the GDDR5 equipping the 6970 is rated for 6Gbps while the 6950 is rated for 5Gbps. The memory of the 6970 also runs 0.1V higher.

If you plan on water cooling it is possible that you will be able to attain higher OCs with a 6970 than a 6950.

And you're calling someone else names?!? Wow... Very civil...

I'm all about the best bang for the buck.. and at ~80% of the price (260 vs 320), potential for 2.1FPS slower, I'd call that a win in any book, I don't care who or what but that's a win with both of them over 60FPS anyhow. It's not like we're talking a < 10 FPS total and a 2FPS difference here... It's 80% of the price for 97% of the performance... That's a win...

To be honest; I have not water-cooled a 69xx yet so I'm not sure what will work. However they are surprisingly quiet so if there isn't one out yet... Shouldn't be a problem for the time being.

Also I have AMD motherboard and processor so I would like to keep the technology.

I wouldn't use that as a reason. If I could afford it (or at the time of my last upgrade, have afforded it), I'd be running an i7 right now. But I still like AMD's GPUs at the moment all things considered. No problem with a little mix up. If you like the nVidia card, or find a great deal on it. It'll work just swell for ya too. Don't let that be the reason that holds ya back. Go with what ya like. Both are great and will run most any game today with all of the eye candy. If you're not apposed to flashing the cards and getting a little technical (it's not hard with the tools out today. Lots of walkthroughs all over about this particular flash also) you can get a killer bang for the buck with a quality 6950. If looking directly at the 570/6970, then right at the moment, nVidia has a better price from what I can see. Will probably change tomorrow. Always does. Keep your eyes/options open and buy what's right for you right when you're ready to buy it. That's the best answer I think anyone can offer.

And no matter what; best of luck with what ever you choose! 😀

Can I tell by looking at a model number on newegg or is that for when I have it in person?

Probably you can, but for starters you can just look at the cooler - the reference design is a shroud so any non-shroud isn't reference.

This sapphire for example http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-921-_-Product isn't a reference design (actually this one is a 1GB model, but sapphire has this http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?leg=&psn=000101&pid=1082 2GB model that seems to use the same cooler, hence my mistake).

This one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-914-_-Product is.

Well more reason to stay with AMD. It has been shown that Fermi doesn't play BC2 well on any but i5/i7's.

It never crossed your mind that he may not have a motherboard capable of SLI but capable of crossfire? :\

Id say get the 2gb 6950 and flash it to a 6970 bios so you get those unlocked shader units. then give it a tiny OC and have yourself a slightly faster than 6970 card for about 260$.

6950 -> 6970 with bios flash = 6970 for 260$
570 = 2fps faster than the 6970 in BC2, Costs ~350$

if 2 fps is worth 90$ differnce, get the 570.

In other games though, a stock 6970 comes out ontop of the 570.
