Anyone out there know a reasonable amount about Solaris?

I am working in a class using it and was looking for anyone who would be willing to answer a few questions or give me a few pointers....

Ask away, Im no guru, but somewhat knowledgeable, and there are some other people sitting around here who know alot more.

Well here it goes then....

What is the correct way to setup DNS on the machine. I edited the /etc/resolv.conf to include the DNS servers, but it's not using them. Did I miss another thing I need to change?

There's a file called "nsswitch.conf" in the /etc dir.
This file contains a bunch of rows such as "passwd: files" "group: files" etc.

A few lines down there is a line that reads "hosts: files" by default, add "dns" after files, so it reads "hosts: files dns".

Thanks for the tip... Web Surfin' with out a hitch now... Ping is a riot... Host is alive...

How do I get connected to a printer?
We have an HP4si in the lab (has a JetDirect Card)...

I tried an lpadmin command set from a FAQ I found... we could print banner pages and walking text (not doing cr/lf)... Then I tried adding the info into /etc/printers.conf and it wouldn't even recognize what I put in... Should I take down lpsched and try lpd instead?

Damm I am starting to realize there's too much stuff to do for this and not enough time... Sad part is we are better off than the other groups in the class...

I am really starting to like linux a lot more
:p

How about this one, I the freck can I not install Solaris 8 for Intel on my machine at work?!?!? I've read that Web Installer has a problem with drives larger than 8GB.

Any workaround?

Use the old text based installer.
There are lots of bugs with the fancy new installer in Solaris 8, though I've never installed it on a x86, I imagine it doesnt work much better there than it does on Sun boxes.

for printing, download HP's JetAdmin, it's a lot easier. Sun even list the link to it on SunSolve. And I agree with Sunner about the Sol8 installer. I couldn't install on a Netra T1 using it, but when I went with for the straight install, there were no problems

The X installer ran fine for me... Of course I booted from the CDrom in the PC to do the install, so that's a different can-o-worms...

I'll check out the JetAdmin... Will that work with Ghostscript?

I am booting from the CD in the machine as well. The Web Installer just dies. I'll look into this text-based install.

Be sure to follow the cd removal instructions... we didn't and that messed up the first try at the install...

My problems turned out to be a bad CD burn. Now I'm on to my next problem ... installing Solaris on a logical partition. :) Oh JOY!

You think I'm a masochist? :) I'm really not trying to be one. I'd just hate to jeopardize 4 OSes that happily co-exist just so I can install the fifth.

I'm wondering if the installer will see the logical partition if it is already formatted as such. I just figure out how to format it without Solaris already running.

VERY FREAKING WEIRD.

I got my mitts on an external SCSI hard drive and attached it to my system. I disabled the internal IDE drives in BIOS. The Solaris install saw, partitioned, and formatted the SCSI drive. But it still generated errors trying to access the IDE primary drive. All of that equaled an unsuccessful install. :(

-SUO, about to give up
