what is up with AT's obession with non-TN panels? 99.99% of people won't be able to tell the difference in everyday use

You answered your own question, i.e., that remaining .01% constitutes AT.

i wouldn't be surpised if there are some AT users who couldn't even tell the different. there are a lot of TN panels that look absolutely fine for gaming, movies, or everyday use.

120hz and 'non-tn' have just become the new 'i'm better than you' fad. like the people who claim they can hear the difference in an expensive roll of speaker wire or can't game without a 5000dpi laser mouse.

Exactly. I prefer something that is better than a TN panel. 🙂

Just look at them from an angle, takes a second to spot a TN panel.

I never cared about TN vs anything else... until I got myself a P-MVA, oh goodness. I can never go back, personally.

yeah, that's the easiest way to tell. but who cares? i don't sit with with my monitor at a 45* angle to me, it's dead on in front of my face.

edit- here's the real question: whatever happened to MVA and PVA panels? i have no complaints about my S-PVA gateway, but it seems like all anyone will make anymore is TN (or IPS at a hefty premium).

It becomes more of an issue when you have multiple monitors as they are not placed directly in front of the user (at least one panel isn't).

Dang, this is tempting. My 2005FPW (IPS I believe) would become my second monitor and be at an angle so this would be the main and be straight on, that should alleviate most of the TN issues right there. Sure color is one thing but I can always do photo editing in my second monitor...

The viewing angle issue is always there but there are some TN monitors that look better than some IPS monitors when looking straight on.

Of course if you listen to many here at AT, all TN monitors are sh*t and all IPS monitors are amazing.

TN FTW.

Yep, i said it.

QFT!

I am loving my Samsung 23". Easily one of the best monitors I have owned. My old 20 Dell IPS never looked this good!

I also thought I wouldn't be able to tell the difference until I saw two side by side. TN isn't really bad but other types are noticeably better. That said, TN displays are cheap, so they're still a good value.

This is a good deal even for a TN monitor.

there are a bunch of snobs here that have to dis everyone's purchases that is why.

i'd rather pay a little more for better quality, but thats just me. and seemingly others do as well, otherwise pva and ips would not even exist in this world.

Horizontal viewing angles are less of an issue nowadays with new TN panel technology, but for larger monitors like the cheapie Hanns 28", it is very easy to notice the vertical viewing angle issues even right up in front. If you tilt your head up or down, it is very evident. Also, it's true that most times you will be sitting directly in front of the monitor, but if someone else is watching or you have multiple monitors, TNs are absolutely wretched. There are plenty of college students who gather some friends in their rooms to watch a movie on the computer screen; the fading is horrible.

Why is it not required for makers to list they type of panel on the box? I have never understood why I have to dig through forums and double check model numbers and production dates to tell what type of panel I am getting.
