SOFY? WTF is SOFY?

sorry about the title...

got a bit frustrated last night...
built a PC together yesterday on the following parts

ASUS A8N-32 SLI
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800
2GB PC3200 RAM
SONY DVD Burner

and all went fine, used a crappy old case i have lying around...

but then when i start and go into bios, i get SOFY as a DVD drive...

what the heck is this SOFY coming from? is this a bootleg drive?

what i dont get is i swapped with another SONY...

now i have 2 SOFY... WTF is SOFY?

LOL, too late to think straight so i shut it down and went to sleep...

anyone?

any thoughts?

Either a typo somewhere in the firmware or your drive "fell off the back of a truck" ;).

... with my luck, if i try LiteOn, i will get a "five finger discounted" version and it will read as "Lilo"

so firmware eh?

Edit: I'd say check all the serial numbers and barcodes and stuff and if it looks legit then odds are it's just a strange error somewhere.

Sofy is the result of firmware being developed outside of primarily English speaking nations.

Did anyone think of SOFY standing for something like Sony F* Y*? (Not the swearing case!!!!)--> something like Sony Firmware Yellowstone?

I've had every-other letter in a drive's ID string show up strangely before. Usually due to cabling problems or a busted IDE controller, or perhaps a bent pin somewhere.

That's awesome.

I had some weird issue w/ one of my Maxtors showing up as Grizzly something in the bios :confused:

I forget how i fixed it, but i wish i would taken pics...was weird as hell.

Edit: weird, just googled it, & it turns out Grizzly is part of the name i guess?!
/dunno, but it's now showing normally.

try updating your bios. Maby the engineer had a lisp when he said sony, hence sofy

Check the drive; is there a secret message CD already in it?

On a somewhat related note: a friend of mine bought a laptop off eBay and when he turned it on there was a DVD called "Horny Perfect 10s" in the drive. :confused:
