software to tell me

ok, so i have an option to get 2-p3s 800 mhz, for 25 bucks, should i just do that?

Well, depends on what you need. If your CPU simply is too slow and you MUST upgrade and you think 800MHz will be sufficient, then sure. But keep in mind that there are some amazing deals going on lately - for instance a few weeks ago I got a motherboard with onboard everything and a dual-core CPU for $79.99. Consider that you can buy 1GB sticks of DDR2 to put in that for like $30, that gives you nearly a brand new PC for just a tad over $100 and that thing will kick the living poop out of your P3 box. So just consider such an option before you spend $25 on something that will still be slow. 🙂

yeah, but does it fit in a server case?

Be more specific - there are tons of different kinds of server cases out there. 🙂

I guess I still just don't know what your needs are nearly enough to tell you if it's worth $25. If a 800MHz box is what you need and 550MHz isn't, then I guess it's worth it. Personally, I'd throw the thing away and buy a new box. 😛

I'm out for the nite so hopefully somebody else can help you better than I can - good luck! 🙂

Theres nothing wrong with dual 800mhz P3's if thats all you need. My web server is sitting on a 1ghz P3 and my FTP server is sitting on dual 933mhz P3's it's never needed more. Make sure the slot processors you get are just PC100's since you buss speed is 100mhz. Get PC133 processors and you'll notice a bad change in speed, if they even boot up.

thank you, its actually dual 550s, and im looking to get dual 800s

An Athlon X2 will spank that so hard it's not even slightly funny.

If this is a server I'd just leave it as it is until it dies or *maybe* get the 800s... you wouldn't want to be putting budget components in there.

If it's you're desktop... well clearly you're after more performance, and you need a new system to see anything significant.

yeah, but does it fit in a server case?

What is your current motherboard?
