software to measure dba?

I want to measure the dba of my pumps, doesn't have to be 100% accurate, just want to know what they are.

I have a mic already, is it possible? Or is there cheap hardware I can purchase?

iPhone app is definitely your best bet as a cheap option. Only downside is the iPhone might have a limit on the amount of dB it's microphone can handle. But assuming you're not working with anything too loud, you should be alright.
