Software to identify video files?

I have a few AVI files which will not play in Media Player - I've downloaded divx, xvid, and a number of other codecs which currently still refuse to play - I get a "file format not recognized" message.

Is there an application out there that can analyze the file and if possible retrieve the file type for me?
