Software to disable banners and adds?

webwasher is free, and very good. The only caveat might be that on graphic intensive sites or ones that have pop-up windows to alert you of specials, you will miss them unless you turn off WW; also the coupon buttons on buy.com will not appear unless turned off.
 
naviscope is pretty cool. ever hate downloading on sites when you can't use a resuming program? well naviscope will give you the exact adddress of the file, which isn't found on the web page.
 
I would recommend leaving the ads on. Ads like the one you see at the top of this page pay for this great site...without them it wouldn't be here.

However...🙂)) if you must, I would say the best way to do it is edit your host file and just make whatever host the ads are coming from equal 127.0.0.1
 
I use http://www.junkbuster.com/. It is multiplatform. I have it set up on my Linux firewall/router. You can choose to use it or not easily by just changing the proxy settings in the browser. Usually I leave it off just to support the web sites I frequent, however, sometimes the banner ads and popups of a specific site get annoying.

It is GPL and can control access to cookies without having those anoying dialog boxes or flat out rejecting them.
 
I use the hosts file to block ads on one machine but when I tried it with another that is running IE4 some ads cause a pop up error about not being able to reach the server. The box has to be manually closed. Is there some Internet setting I have missed or do I need to update to IE5? In any case, where can I download a full version of IE5 to install on the bandwidth challenged machine?
 
where is the host file located ?
can someone tell me ? Its very frustating
with lots of ads especially when you are using
dial up modem.
 
I use Norton Internet Security 2000. It blocks adds, is a firewall, and acts as a parental block. It might not be as configurable as other programs, but with all the updates that it has it gets the job done.
 
Ethics for just a moment, please.

I installed a banner blocker during the "Punch the Monkey" ad campaign. It was SO annoying, slowed my pages and hurt my eyes. Now that it is gone (I hope), I uninstalled my banner blocking.

Sometimes you just have to protest. Anyway (back to hardware), Ads-off worked really well for me.
 
For a little fun, I recommend that Webwasher users check their resources when it's enabled versus disabled. Be prepared for a shock!

How does 10-15% resource useage suit you? :Q

This useage and the fact that ad revenue is what keeps the forums going made me give up on ad screening software after a couple of hours.

Well, I started out using AtGuard then augmented that with BlackICE. Now I have ditched the latter for ZoneAlarm and use hosts for blocking ads. I have not removed AtGuard yet but did not bother installing it on WinMe or Win00 (I'm not even sure if it works on 00). AtGuard can just be used to block ads and pop ups and such but I would rather just use the hosts file in combination with ZA I think rather than using more software than necessary. That would leave me vulnerable to pop-ups but that is less of a problem. I will take a look at Ads Off and those others recommended but then I may as well keep AtGuard. Slapping the hosts on the other dial-up machine was a no brainer.

I use a couple batch files to toggle hosts usage:
Hosts Ad Block Enable
REN C:\WINDOWS\HOSTS.TXT HOSTS

Hosts Ad Block Disable
REN C:\WINDOWS\HOSTS HOSTS.TXT

I use zone alarm pro right now, and do no want to use norton internet security.

Which is best for banner ads and whic is best for popups?
